I know its the cool season but at the moment I am getting through 5 euros of logs a night, mind you my house was pretty cold when I got here yesterday. The question I have is when do people start lighting their fires and when do they stop. My guess is end of november to end of feb but I have never been here that permanently in winter.

oh, and while I am on about it can anyone recommend a log supplier with an idea of cost for a lorry load for next year, we are thinking of moving here permanently and I have cut down a couple of trees on my own land but have since found out this is not a good idea if you get caught..they were spoiling the view anyway and I have lots more that I havn't cut down.:D
Currently paying 9 euros a bag of olive which will add up next winter!

maybe a bit longer than that. depends on the house and where you are. i stored 3 tonnes of olive and pine for use this winter. warren is undoubtedly the king of fires on this island, his lounge never drops below 30 degrees.

edit. i paid 520 for my wood which should last all winter - we light up about 13.00 every day

The temperature indoors has dropped considerably today because I was foolish enough to let the missus take over the firewood for two days and she has filled the wood basket with damp logs from the garden rather than use some of the bone dry wood that has been on the veranda for several months.

you could call it that, I emailed the town hall in santa eularia to ask if I could cut trees downnear my house in the campo, they replied-

Any trees that you want to cut has to be a permit from the town hall. Our enviroment department will be pleased to attend your demand, will come and will see if your need applies to the law and will allow to cut the pine tree if is dangerous to fall on to the house but is nothing to do with the meters as far as we know when is a rustic area. But in any case our best recomendation is to get in contact with our thecnician and he will be suggestion you what you can do or not. The mail address you have to write is : mediambient@santaeularia.com.
Please, do not hesitate in contacting us for further questions.

Mind you, 500 euros for a whole winter of fires is do-able if I cant cut my own ones down!

Do you have Air con that also heats ? If you do it can be one of your cheapest ways to heat here, Also de-humidifies :)

This suddenly sounds familiar. Did you mention this on here a while ago?

I hate it for heating. It makes my eyes itch really badly. I suppose I could wear goggles or my snorkeling mask? ;)

great sizzling steam warren, what were you thinking?

I would like air conditioning/heater but I havn't got enough electricity, one of the drawerbacks of being in the campo I guess. In my house if you are boiling a kettle with the pool pump running and the fridge kicks in you could be in trouble! Nothing a trip to the casita dosn't fix but a bit of a pain.

Yep, I asked if anyone new the rules when it came to cutting trees down near my house following the fire at Benniras.

I need to open up the view a bit and it would be a shame to waste all that burnable wood!

What I understand from The Diario & a friend who cut some then had a visit, (he talked nice to them and got away with it, only pine and were dangerous) If it is within 4m of the house you can remove it with permission from town hall / Equivalent of the forestry commission, which you will virtually automatically get. If it is more than 4 m from the house but could fall on the house or be a fire risk, Again you can remove with permission,(pine,Sabina is another thing) which you will have to persuade the guy that they are whatever,
Up this end it is quite painless :D Contact town hall, guy comes out in a few days, Nice guy, Tell him what you want to cut, he says yes or no and gives you a bit of paper ( & he let him cut more :)) If you don`t ask, I have another friend that got fined 5000€ for 4 pines:spank:

Have a good one

If you want to use it for next winters firewood then you need to get on the case now. The wood will burn better if it's logged sooner rather than later.

I think I might leave it for this year, I don't fancy the fine, currently on their radar for some building work I was fined for 9 years ago!
If we move here permanently at the end of this year then I will maybe get the guy round.
Meanwhile I have bought over an industrial space heater, the kind they use to heat warehouses and car garages. Looks like a small jet engine!
This morning spent modifying it with a couple of jubilee clips and a regulator from a roofing tourch and hey presto! 30mins running and the house is toasty. Tonight will be the big test. Still have a fire though.

What gas you running it on ? If butano you may find if the bottle is outside it "run`s out" prematurely (It will not come out of the bottle below about 4 ish deg) you may want to change to Propano,

Tim

PS Be careful if your space heater is not one with an external flue pipe ( does not sound like it has) In a closed room, It will fill the room with carbon monoxide very quickly ! Death is not far behind ! I would strongly recommend an alarm if you are going to use it

thanks for the advice Tim, it's ok though, I am safe on this one. Without being too nerdy, the heater I have is 100% efficient so it burns everything
, but they don't have a flue! You aren't meant to use them in an enclosed room as they could burn all the available oxygen, sounds a bit crazy but I checked with the manufacturer and as long as I only use it for a couple of hours and keep a door open to let fresh air in then its fine. The idea is that the walls and furniture get warm, used in warehouses etc they presume a flow of fresh air from the loading doors etc.
Thanks for you concern though.

PS
Signed on the Padron this morning, easy peasy. off to the education centre in Ibizza tomorrow!

any bars/restaurants with nice fires in them for these cold months?ill be there on 18feb for few days.
