I hate Genre Whores!

The amount of DJs that are now playing nothing but minimal is astonishing. Each to their own, but why ditch everything and play one genre of house? (check the charts on Beatport) I like some minimal (only after listening to an Audiofly CD) but 90% of it is ****.

I think a lot of people heads are up their own arses when it comes to minimal. Will they still be playing it when something else comes along that is more fashionable? Respect to DJs who just play good music, from across all Genre, be it funky, tribal, deep or even minimal.

Dont sell your soul to what ever is fashionable at the time! It was electro last year, minimal this year - watch this space!

Why is it a bad thing to play what's trendy? If a DJ adapts to their surroundings and plays whatever people will like the most it's a good thing.

i think the majority of it is just electro with a bit of a minimal edge to it - not the same as what the 'minimal' sound was previously. To be fair I think there are alot of DJ's that progress with the popular music at the time because thats whats being produced. Last year there the 'electro' sound was becoming popular so alot of artists turned their hand to it. This creates a wide variety of choice for the DJ so they can still achieve their signature sound whilst playing a popular genre.

Lets not forget that DJ's have to bring the punters in. There aren't many DJ's out there who are lucky enough to play whatever they want and still pull the crowds.

If you look at the likes of Sanchez and Tanaglia, they have always stuck to the same kind off stuff, but obviously kept up to date. There a lots of DJs out there now who will play nothing but was is classed as 'minimal' (I know there is lots of stuff that now comes under this heading)

My point is, why should a decent DJ play the latest fad or fashion. A good DJ is about having an ear for music and not playing what is trendy at that moment in time or what has been dictated by fashion.

Why should a DJ play nothing but funky house one season, Electro the next and then minimal after that? A good DJ can mix a set up incorporating what they think is good. Not just playing music because it is 'trendy'

its just the development of house. you answered your own point. "a good dj is about having an ear for music and not playing what is trendy at the moment".

It just so happens that the best music being created just now (imho) as the bleepier techy house and the deeper stuff (most of which usually originates from Germany/Scandinavia, i aint referring to the blander soulful vocally stuff the yanks produce, altho some of it is good).

Those are the genres where the boundaries are being pushed in my opinion, hence why djs are wanting to be upfront and are probably as excited about the music as the punters are.

a better question should be, why should a dj pigeon hole themselves to one genre which defines the rest of their career?

Hate was probably a strong word... I think you have probably summed up what I was tring to say; why should a dj pigeon hole themselves to one genre which defines the rest of their career?

I like a lot of house that is coming out at the moment and yes, it does have bleepier tech influences. I have just heard so man ypeople jump on the minimal bandwagon and say that is all they play. To me house music is defined by many different genres.

The thing I love abut a Release Yourself night at Pacha is I can take the wife, she will like the first few hours where it can be quite vocal, you get a bit of deep thrown in and then the last four hours the roof truly comes off the place and it gets very messy! (my wife nomrally retreats to the Funky room at that point ;) )
