hidden speed camera traps on the island?

Are there any hidden speed camera traps on the island?

I have seen the warning signs on the main roads but have not actually seen any speed cameras. I have seen plenty cars pulled over by traffic police, but not seen them standing pointing the cameras in mobile speed traps.

So, is anyone aware of any hidden speed traps?
where are they?
how prevalent are they?
can speeding fines be trusted?

I ask this because Avis car rental have charged me an administration charge, claiming that they had to provide the Spanish Traffic Regulation with my personal details. They have also sent a notification letter which says the authorities will send me a fine (which by the way, I won't be paying).

I had no incident with the police, and as I say above, did not spot any visible speed cameras or mobile traps during my trip.

I am also suspicious about the Avis Ibiza branch, because they have already incorrectly charged me for a tank of fuel at 100 euros + VAT (essentially they have stolen from me). I returned the car with a full tank so they shouldn't have charged me. I've only had 20% of the charge refunded and that one is a separate ongoing argument, for which I will be taking all the way with my bank and consumer protection associations.

Apologies if this was too ranty :spank: :D

Interesting...as it was July for me, maybe I am one of the victims they were testing it out on :o

The taxi drivers were still flying past at twice the limit or more when I was there, which was another reason why I couldn't understand why I could have been done. So even the taxi drivers don't know much about the traps yet either...

I still haven't received any notification of prosecution from them. My shredder will enjoy the extra 'feed', should I receive one.

There are mobile speed traps around, I have had the pleasure of one on the Ibiza > Santa Eulalia road  They also like to sit just out of San an on the motorway, Coming from Ibiza everyone slows down for the fixed camera then accelerates again, They sit just over the brow of the hill

ps also led to believe the new Guardia van has all the kit in it, even do you oncoming ,,,

they will in time take it from your card details you gave them.thats why they its done.just cause your out of ibiza.that your goinbg to get away with it.you hired the car its your fault for driving too fast.

Wonder what happens if you do leave without paying it ? Anyone ?
I would not be surprised if in the future, next time you come to Spain you get plod with and outstanding bill waiting for you at customs,,,,,, with an interesting amount of interest,,,

Tim

well they have your uk address.you must pay it.you can do it on line.but its in spanish i think.more if you don;t pay within a time limit.

update on this

Thought I'd update as it could be useful to folk in the future.

Well I did actually get an NIE form with a photo of my hire car 'caught in the act'. I can't say I was entirely satisfied that this photo is evidence enough, but it's actually more evidence than you would get in the UK for an initial notification of offence (fortunately in the UK I have devices in my car to help prevent being done for speeding, but that's another story).

I also verified on the www.dgt.es website that it was on their system.

Also did some research online to find out that they may very well get you in the end the next time you return to the country (as has since been mentioned on the thread) 8O

On the date/time of the offence, I am satisified that I may well have been speeding (as I was rushing to get to the Zoo Project to nab a decent spot at the poolside).

The fine is 100 euros reduced to 50 euros for early payment. I expected the fine to be much higher. Also, there's no points on your licence causing a knock on affect on your insurance like you get in the UK.

So for the sake of a one off 50 euro fine, I have paid it. Just as well it wasn't much higher because I wouldn't have paid a high fine, and would maybe then have had to go to the Greek Islands for the rest of my life for my summer beach holidays

In the main I don't go overboard with the speed when I'm in Ibiza. I always use the taxis and big 4x4 drug dealer cars as a guide, and since they seem to be travelling everywhere at over twice the speed limit I figure that you'll get away with being a bit over. Not anymore it seems, driving like an old fart over there it shall be in the future.

So yet another European country that's gone to war with the motorist. I think Germany now exceeds Ibiza as my favourite trip destination, where ze sensible Germans trust people who are able to drive at high speeds on ze autobahns :)

So after all that you are paying the fine anyway.

You need to come and live here for a few months and drive to work when the locals do and maybe then you will understand why the speed limits seem set so low here. 8O

I know...I know...

But I thought I was going to end up getting chinned for 150-200 euros, and I assumed it wouldn't cause you any hassle if you didn't pay it. For the sake of a 50 euro fine by paying it early rather than having to pay the full 100 euro fine, what's the point in me potentially risking me being not allowed to drive the next time I turn up on the island.

Also helps that I remembered exactly where I was and where I was going at the time of the offence and where their photo showed I was.

I actually think it's a better/fairer system than we have in the UK. For speeding in the UK they don't have the cheaper pay early option, and of course you get points unceremoniously slapped on your licence.

Still not too happy that their speed trap must have been hidden out of sight though, but if that's the way they play it at least I'll know for next time.

Where did you "get done" ?

Tim

Can't tell you the road name/junction as I don't have the 'ticket' handy. But it will be the dual carriageway in to San Antonio (the photo showed a dual carriageway), probably near Benimussa area as that was when I was in a rush. Could have been either direction as I initially overshot the Benimussa turn off and had to come back down the other side.

There are radar warning signs before and/or after you come through the tunnel. But since I've seen other cars/taxis flying through those sections without a care I've assumed there isn't much substance to it. Obviously now there is.

This year I saw several folk pulled over by the cops on that main dual carriageway. The only other place I saw a patrol car waiting to pounce was on the road to San Jose a few miles out of San Antonio.

But I've not seen any actual speed cameras themselves yet (mobile or fixed). So either they are hidden or discrete. The latter if which, I shall need to learn to recognise them...

Are you sure it wasn't the permanent camera facing San Antonio about a mile out from the tunnel?

You mean the big Sant Rafael tunnel? (as I think there is a smaller underpass one as well, unless I'm thinking of the smaller ones near Ibiza Town/PDB)

Couldn't have been near Sant Rafael tunnel as I spent the afternoon at the beach near Kanya before heading up to Zoo Project from the San An direction. Even when I overshot the exit I didn't drive as far as the tunnel to get back.

Also, I'm usually careful what speed I'm doing around the tunnels on that main road as I view them as prime spots for speed traps as it is.

I reckon it's more likely to be the mobile traps that the taxi drivers have been complaining about, as mentioned in the link provided earlier in the thread.

The one camera is by the second bridge after the tunnels Ibiza > San an dual carriageway, Sign is by first bridge, The other is just before the San Raf turn
Tim

which ever you sorted it now.i forgot to mention if you pay it early its cheaper..really...mine you the cops like to get you on the ibiza to santa eulalia road as well.and moblie just out side space.along with tow truck.
