help needed!

Don't worry too much about your national insurance number - I was here for 3 years before I got mine! They'll give you a temporary one to begin with (which will have a slightly higher rate of tax, so best to sort it out reasonably quickly), then you'll have to make an appointment and undergo a short interview. My employer set this up for me, not sure if that's the norm.

For accomodation have you put an ad in loot/gumtree?

ill try gumtree again if i dont get a hold of the guy soon! i mean, were getting close and i need a place to stay dammit lol*

how much tax do you pay in UK
here we pay 50 % of the first 20.000 pounds we earn, then 55 of the 5.000 hereafter and up to 67 !!!! % of the last 10.000 and everytyhing above that! so being rich in DK is no fun.

income tax is 21% i think, but with national insurance contributions it works out at around 30% being deducted

It's nothing like that, I think the top tax bracket is around 39 or 40 percent (I wouldn't know ;))

you only pay 30 % taxes!!! thats amazing! and what does that incluse?? like hospital insurance, medical and so on?
That can't be right... everyone I know in the UK says they pay about 40% :?

yeah 30% depending on what you earn, like mark i wouldn't know about big earners but up to £30,000 its only 30% (well it is for me anyway).

yeah the good old national health service is free to all. not sure exactly how it works for non-UK residents, i think as long as you get your NI number then you are entitled the same as the rest of us (i think!! )

double checked my pay slip and its 22% income tax, 8.8% nat. insurance.

like i said i don't know how the tax bracket changes above £30,000........i'm up north so don't get a 'london salary'

Here it is:

The tax brackets for the UK 2004/2005 are as follows (if under the age of 65:
up to £4,745 --- tax free
between £4,745 - £6,765 --- 10%
between £6,765 - £36,145 --- 22%
over £36,145 --- 40%

Ooh. Apparently big changes in the UK tax code this year. I just found this:

In the 2005-2006 tax year, the tax brackets were:

10%: from £0 to £2,090
22%: from £2,090 to £32,400
40%: from £32,400 and above

Greco no problem. Im from Denmark, but only have 1/16th of danish blood in me. Im originally russian/polish/swedish (mostly swedish) and happen to move to the UK where I was once raised (confusing story, really!) ;)

you just love calling me greco don't ya :? :? - ok then, i'll allow just you to call me greco but please keep it private ;) ;) ;)

the reason i ask is so i can assess if it is going to be a jungle like u say or whether you'll be able to cope with it all.

the fact is i don't know one single scandanavian (especially one raised in UK) who hasn't found UK life extremely easy to adapt to. So in fact....you are ok, its not a jungle!!!

erm, that's weird, surely we would have been told about that?? that's basically a massive increase in income tax as loads of people now fall in the top bracket because they've not increased it in line with inflation!!!!

ahhh confusing but nevertheless I just got the apartment thingy solved so YEAH ! Im moving to richmond, excellent!!

and as far as taxes go: well it cant be worse than DK anyway

and grego yeah i secrelty call you greco, but thats just for :D

cheeky bastards.

i suppose thats one way of not "increasing income tax". cos technically they aint.

:x

I think morbyd might have got this wrong because I'm fairly sure there would have been a massive uproar if this was the case...

Actually, I think the 2004/05 numbers I had were bogus. Here's another chart I found with a comparison

------------------------------------------2005/06 (£) --------- 2004/05 (£)
Starting rate 10% on first -------------2,090 ---------------- 2,020
Basic rate (20% for savings income)
22% on next ----------------------------30,310 --------------- 29,380
Higher rate 40% on income over -----32,400 --------------- 31,400

This one's from an accountancy, so I hope it's accurate.
