Help for a noob

Hey guys,

I'm going to Ibiza for a week June/July 2014 and I'm extremely excited! When it comes to EDM, I'm just now really getting into it. I don't even know if saying "I like EDM" is a correct statement. I read reviews on here saying things like "(so and so DJ) plays a great progressive house mix" or "(so and so club) has a great trance room" or I hear terms like "Tech house" "Techno" and "deep house." Now, I can recognize dubstep because my brother went through a dubstep phase, but any other sort of EDM that I listen to I can just say to myself "I like this song, it sounds good" or "I don't like this song," but I have no idea if what I am listening to is house, techno, progressive, trance, or whatever. Do you guys know of a website that breaks down the different music styles, explains what their characteristics are, and how they differ from one another? I like all types of music, so I'm sure I'll find myself enjoying something from every style; however, when I get to Ibiza I'd like to be more informed so I can better plan my nights around the types of music and artists that I like.

Thanks for the help!

The word 'house' is pretty meaningless in 2013. Everyone claims they play house when what they mean is they knocked up a derivative kick drum on a laptop in a departure lounge in an airport. There is a massive difference between quality house (5%) and mediocre/poor house (95%). I'll start with the 5%. If the dj/producer is called dixon, todd terje, luke solomon, harri & dom, kerri chandler, henrik schwarz, ame, marcus worgull, keith worthy, dj deep, spencer parker, theo parrish, prosumer, radioslave, gerd janssen, andrew weatherall, icube, steve moore, michael mayer... to name a few, the chances they will make/play real house, check their mixes to get an idea. If you want more 'trendy' house, listen to anything on the hot natured label or in the beatport charts, eg disclosure and the kind of stuff making a splash in the pop charts which has a much more 90s moody vocal-oriented garridgey feel. If you want to listen to 'edm' consult the dj top 100 list on the other page and listen to what those guys play. Then i think you'll notice the difference. I'm obv biased but i hope that helps

Definitely helps, and thanks for helping. I know I probably sounded like a complete tool when I posted my question. I guess one thing that is hard for me is DJ recognition. For example, if I'm somewhere and an Eminem song comes on I immediately recognize that it is Eminem because of his voice, and can then add that to my mental list of whether it is a song by Eminem that I like or not. If I'm somewhere and a "house" song comes on, unless someone says "hey this is Solomon (etc)" I'll never be able to associate that song with the artist. I have a large "house" playlist on my computer at home, and I'll play it while I'm cleaning or cooking or whatever. Songs play on it all the time that I like, but if you asked me right now to name one of the DJs or one of the songs on my playlist, I couldn't. But, I guess that is where Don Simon's advice comes in:

Forget all this genre $hit, just like what you like
The term EDM is just marketing...

I'll start listening to the DJs you listed and see if I like them. It helps when people recommend stuff to me. I don't really know anyone that listens to this kind of music, so I'm always shooting in the dark when I'm trying to find good music to listen to. I guess when the DJ lists come out for late June/early July 2014 I can narrow down which venues/parties I want to check out.
