Hed Kandi - The Beach Party 21/07/06

Billed as being held at a secret location, this annual event has air of familiarity gained from using the same 'secret' venue year after year. Within a few minutes of arriving at the beautiful little San Antonio beach (yes, a beautiful beach in San An and not the only one) of Calo Gracionetta Spotlight decides that familiarity is the complete essence of this party. Buses have been laid on from Es Vive and Savannah, and the one from the former had definitely transported some faces to be seen around the hotel´s pool every season without fail. There´s a sense that the bulk of the throng of party folk patronise Kandi events back home and many we spoke to had planned their visit to coincide with this one.

Early birds were treated to a BBQ and beer (courtesy of Sol), but by Spotlight´s 10pm arrival, partying had long taken over as priority number one. The music is exactly as you´d expect, continuing the theme of the familiar - there are airings of old favourites like Kimberlee´s recently re-released ´Fade´, Loveland's ´Let the Music Lift You Up´ as well as newer populist offerings such as Bob Sinclar´s ´World Hold On´. There´s no minimal here, unless you´re counting up frowns - we didn´t find one. DJ´s Rob Wilder and David Dunne are broadcasting live back to the UK on Galaxy Radio and the crowd are more than happy to play their whooping, hollering part. Ibiza Angels (pictured below) are on hand for head, neck and shoulder massages and another group of young ladies (same picture below), are displaying some high quality heavenly plummage. We never quite work out if they are paid peformers or just worthy a grade 'A' for effort.

When the music stops, the satisfied crowd troop back to their coaches having enjoyed themselves, which despite the lack of Trentemoller's latest, is exactly what Spotlight seems to remember all this is about. This is another event (see reviews passim), where only the very greenest of clubbers might find much education, but where people danced for kicks and went home (or more likely on to the next place) smiling.
