Question: Do you believe that this subject is true, reason i ask is because it seem's there is very little left of the old island of Ibiza as i knew it from the late 60's70's early 80's. It's appear's that the island has been taken over by property developer's and a get rich quick industry... It's seem's that Ibiza has lost some of it's unique character as, i can remember the day's when it was just a humble little island frequented by peace loving hippies.....The pace of life then was at a snail's pace, but today one might as well be in London, Paris or New York as it seem's everyone is competing in a 100 mtr sprint ....... The hippie market which is held every wednesday in the Punta Arabie holiday village was just that a hippie market, now you are more like'ly too find the marques Armanie, hugo boss, burberry than you would from the local's..Don'nt get me wrong as I like Ibiza often staying in or near to es-canar\cala nova but even so, i cannot help but notice that one is more like'ly too meet a culture that is english or german than the local one??? True these are holiday resort's but so what, what's happened to the local culture that has been buried under the concrete of hotel's and appartment's etc... We have the same problem here in France whereby the english are buying up all our properties and literally changing the way of our culture.... In some part's of France the english language is the norm though i just hope Ibiza manage's too keep some of it culteral tradition's....Sorry for long post, guess i got carried away but i need too get this subject of my chest as it seem's i'm the only person who feel's Ibiza's change is not good for the local tradition's......

Everyone goes on about Ibiza changing blah blah blah, so what, nothing stays the same. I think its changed for the better, move with the times and all that.

I'm sure it's changed a lot, not sure about for the best as my earliest memory was only 1987 (not exactly hippy times)

I would, however, love to have seen it how it's described in The White Isle book over the last 2000 years, especially in the 50's/60's.

I can definately say i felt that 'spiritual' vibe my first few times there but i feel it's lost that over the last 2/3 years. Maybe that's down to seeing it in different ways the more you go?

I dunno, i've not been this year (yet?) but everything just seems a little worn out and done before. Maybe it's just me that's worn out?

:?

Everyone tell's me i look young for my age :D so when i am asked how old i am i say 36yrs, but of course i also stated ( in my profile ) that i'm retired ;) as here in France one could ( before our law on retirement changed ) retire from 50yrs depending on their profession.... Hence i'm one of the lucy one's ... Though my english wife is true'ly in her 30's and so she make's me feel younger than i am + our kid's of whom many would think that i am there grandad

To Drew, don't worry as i'm sure your not feeling worn out with Ibiza, but maybe it's because you now know what too expect when you go their and perhap's you feel that you've been their, done that etc and so maybe it's time for a change... At first i was ok, about the new developement's on the island as it brought work to the local population but instead of the developer's stopping when enough seemed enough, what do they go and do they build more and more.... I don't think too many people will disagree if i say that ibiza is just a concrete island ... As for the person who wrote in saying quote " move with the time's " end quote, fair enough but not at the expense of the local population... Afterall the wage's paid to the local's on the island are nothing more than a token gesture even though the cost of living is i expect is high... When one look's at the island's property market i don't see how a manuel labourer or shop assistant can afford too buy what is on offer, as some of the price's quoted begger's beyond belief... But i doubt whether or not people who go their only as tourist's would understand....

no shit sherlock

I know Ibiza since 1985, it didnt changed much,...much more expensive, but thats it...oh, and the discos are not open air anymore...

the big changes will come in the next 5 years,...highways, a promenade in front of cafe del mar,..sport marinas,...buildings, buildings, more buildings....but i will not stop going there  :D

Everyone has a right to air an opinion about whatever.. I'm certainl'y not of my head though like vienna say's quote " building's, building's and more building's" end quote, hence my concern.. Of course like vienna, i along with my family will return there for our holiday's as it's only over the pond 1hr by plane.. Back in the early 80's one was able too get the transmeditterannie ( or spelt something like that ) ferry which set off from the french porte of Sete, stopping off en-route at Majorca .. However the route was not popular during the 90's with holidaymaker's so eventually the service was stopped...It seem's everyone prefer's the long drive down to Barcelona, Alicantè etc...Of course the cheap budget airline industry did'nt help the cause either...By the way vienna i remember back in august 1985 meeting up with some people who were Austrian ( not very important ), infact one member of the group had i think American\Austrian nationalitie and he was studiying at Graz universitie ...

Anyway i don't mean to affend anyone on this subject, but if i have then i'm just sorry that you dion't know the Ibiza as i and no-doubt many other's knew it.... End of subject

If you read "The Life & Death of small Spanish Town" by Elliot Paul, you will see that Ibiza was a lot different in 1936 that it was in 1966 - a concrete jungle in comparison.

As the world moves on, places change that's what life is all about. No doubt in twenty years time people will be writing to this forum telling everybody how much the character of Ibiza has been lost since they were last there in 2005.
