I attended the World Travel Market in London last year and picked up some literature on Ibiza... one of the pamphlets made mention of the popularity of harness racing in Ibiza, but didn't list any tracks or locations. Anyone have any tips on this?

Harness Racing is horse racing where the drivers sit behind the horse in a "sulky"... the horses are standardbreds, not thoroughbreds (to gallop in a race would actually be bad), and might be considered "trotters" in europe as opposed to the states... (thought I'd throw this in for those that have no idea what I'm talking about!) :)

there's a hippodrome at san rafael on the road to santa eulalia where there are regular meetings

and at san jorge at the top of the road to las salinas where meetings are held occasionally

McR- hey, that's it! nice pics! what a resourceful fellow you are! :)

stephen- sounds like I'll need a car to get to either one of those... thanks for the tips...

anyone else know much about this topic?

Fiz,

Harness racing is pretty popular here in Australia too. I have a bet every now and then, as well as greyhounds and thoroughbred racing.

I didn't know there was a track in Ibiza. I went to San Rafael but didn't notice the track.

the bus goes right past san jorge (sant jordi) track

the san rafael track is about a ten minute walk from the town centre.

however i think the meetings in summer are late at night ( not sure on that though) so a car would be better. i'll try to find out some dates and times.

saturdays @ san rafael
sundays @ san jorge

i know in san jorge are during the afternoon. not sure about san rafael as i havent been since i was a little kid!! :P

groover- in the states, at least, if a horse comes from Australia to race, the horses name ends with A ... as in "Sunshine Forever A" (a claimer from years back)... and if they came from New Zealand, the name would end with in an N ... as in "Gigi Franco N" (shifty mare from years back)... I'd see them from time to time, so yeah, I figure the sport had some popularity in those parts.

I used to live and breathe that sport. Not much anymore... don't know if I will spend much time trying to locate and visiting the tracks when I'm in IBZ, but good info to keep in the back of my head, just in case!

:)

I seem to recall the racing didn't start until 01.00AM to allow people to have dinner before going out to the races - bit cooler too.
