Gunman storms stage, kills 4 at Ohio nightclub

Police officer shoots suspect to death

COLUMBUS, Ohio (CNN) -- A gunman stormed the stage during a heavy metal concert in Columbus, Ohio, on Wednesday night, firing at the band and audience and killing four people before a police officer shot and killed him, police said.

One of the dead was guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, 38, of the band Damageplan. The gunman also wounded two people.

Columbus police identified the suspect as Nathan Gale, 25, of nearby Marysville but said they had no information about a motive or possible connection to the band.

The man was "targeting members in the band," Columbus police Sgt. Brent Mull said.

Before the gunman was shot, police said, he grabbed a hostage and fired into the crowd. The hostage was unharmed, Mull said.

The attack came shortly after Damageplan began its performance at the Alrosa Villa nightclub on Columbus' north end.

One of the wounded is in critical condition, and the other is hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Two others were hurt and treated at the scene, although the nature of their injuries was not clear.

The gunman initially shot the band's guitarist, Abbott, witnesses said.

He and his brother, Vinnie Paul Abbott, 40, formed Damageplan after Pantera -- a group they formed in the 1980s -- broke up last year. Their father is Jerry Abbott, a country and western songwriter and producer.

Police were notified of the shooting around 10:18 p.m., Mull said. A uniformed police officer who was near the scene slipped into the venue from a back entrance, confronted the gunman during the rampage and killed him, authorities said.

"If not for the officer who showed up, there would have been more dead," Mull said.

At least one of those killed -- Nathan Bray -- was an audience member. Mull identified another deceased victim as Erin Halk, although it was unclear if he was attending the concert or an employee.

Mull did not identify the other fatality. Abbott was the only band member confirmed dead "at this point," he said.

Witnesses described the shooter as a heavyset man, wearing a Columbus Blue Jackets hockey jersey.

Police roped off a huge area of the nightclub's parking lot as 60 detectives questioned hundreds of witnesses. Police brought in buses to keep the witnesses warm as they waited.

Calvin Bota said he saw the shooting from the mosh pit right in front of the stage, shortly after the band began playing.

"Somebody came -- I don't know where they came from, out of the audience or whatnot -- but they come onto [the] stage and ... he shot the guitarist at first, fired a couple of other shots and then he hid behind the stage a little bit," Bota told CNN affiliate WSYX.

"Everybody started scattering, you know, there's mayhem everywhere. And then a police officer came into the building, you know, came in professional with his gun raised, and then he proceeded to shoot the guy."

Gerald Caudill said the gunman shot the guitarist at least four times.

"I was up close to the stage, and I just saw some guy run up on the side of the stage, and I heard some shots and I saw [drummer] Vinnie [Paul Abbott] fall, and somebody jumped on top of Vinnie, and the guy just stayed around the stage and started shooting other people," Caudill said.

"I saw wounded people all over the place, out in the parking lot, inside," he said. "It just didn't sound like gunshots or anything; it didn't occur to me that something like that was happening."

Forget Rage Against The Machine, Slipknot and Oasis, when it comes to working the Reading Festival crowd up into a frenzy Daphne and Celeste take the biscuit... and the rotten tomatoes, eggs, bottles of water and worse.

Even Tom Jones' surprise guest appearance with Stereophonics for Sunday night's climax couldn't match them for audience reaction.

The American teenage duo's appearance on stage was greeted with a hail of missiles and abuse from the crowd, the likes of which has probably not been seen at Reading since Meatloaf was bottled off in 1988.

The girls stayed well to the back of the stage, but soldiered on with their syrupy pop and even dared to appear for a brief press photocall afterwards.

They were only scheduled to sing to their backing tape for 15 minutes but their performance will be infamous for years to come.

Dimebag was the man. I am a huge metalhead (and by that I mean I'm huge and I'm a metalhead) and I am at a loss for words to describe the sadness and disappointment I feel about the loss of DBD.

He was it. He was the Heavy-metal hero. And now he's gone.

Shoot me for saying this (no pun intended) but somehow I think heavy metal music attracts aggressive behaviour.

I'm not going to lynch you for your opinions. I'm going to calmly explain my opinion on the matter.

Now, for the matter at hand. Nathan Gale was also a football player and a US Marine. Nobody is going to blame those two things for him killing four people, for those two activites are as American as apple pie and sodomy. Sure, a football player's job is to knock into each other hundreds of times in an hour, and a Marine's job is to kill people, but nither of those activities influenced "Crazy Nate" to run into a club and kill four before becoming the fifth dead.

Oh, ya, "Crazy Nate" isn't something I made up. That was his actual nickname, givin to him because of his rather "erratic" behavoir. Behavior that included killing small animals as a child and violence towards his romantic intrests. Nathan Gale was a full-blown twelve-cylinder wacko.

Ok, so Nathan Gale had violent jobs and was a certified loon and he killed four people. Lets blame the music!

It would be easy, for many of Pantera's and Damageplan's songs have violent lyrics. As a critic of the art one must understand that they use metaphore and similie to describe things. If one was just casually listenting to the lyrics they might think that the music is encouraging violence. But know that the vast majority of bands are anti-violence/anti-war/anti-hate and they may describe something in detail, but the purpose is only to show the stupidity of war and hate.

On the local Metal radio station here in NY I heard a DJ reading a song from Metallica where James talks of killing his mother and burning her. Pretty violent right? Come to find out, near the end of the song, it is clear he is talking about mother earth and how people are distroying the earth. Metaphore, metaphore.

Its too easy to blame music. It is such a huge part of people's life. I listen to Cannibal Corpse, Amon Amarth, Tool, Slipknot, and the aformentioned Pantera and Damageplan. I have never been in a fight in my life. I am anti-war. I love animals. I love life.

There is always going to be the fruits that just so happen to connect to a certian genre of music, but that is like that in every genre. Just look at Rap!

I worked with a man who after quitting his job at Ultralife, got arrested for Rape, Molestation, Sodomy and Child Pornography charges. He was doing this for months undetected. He listened to John Tesh and Yanni. Are all child molesters fans of Yanni? No. It's just as asinine to blame Heavy Metal for violence.

Yeah, see, I never knew that. Because I cannot listen to heavy metal, to me it just sounds way too aggressive.
Thanks for the explanation though!

Do you like house music as well? If yes, then you must be one of a kind! I thought that metal heads hate house music, well at least they do around here :?

I'll listen to Oakenfold and then put on Amon Amarth. I'll listen to Electro-Jazz band Hooverphonic and then put on Static-X (a band that uses Trance beats to make Heavy Metal). I'm elecletic to say the least.

How many people that you know would wear a three-piece suit and green hair to a rock concert? Everything about me is VERY unique.

Go off and find the song "Unspoken" by Italian Goth-Metal band Lacuna Coil. I think that song is responsible for more of my friends becoming metalheads than any other song. Slipknot's "Spit it out" is also another gateway song, but that is a bit more brutal. Look up Finnish Metal act Lullacry, too.

Peppermint, I am from Lyons, New York, the Peppermint capital of the world. Just look up H.G. Hotchkiss if you want the whole story.

It's you ugly, you ugly. You're not to use proper English while doing a street song.

Also, if you were to do it your way, it would be "you're ugly", not "your ugly".
