Grown up question

Has anyone on here ever bought a kitchen? :?

Where are the best places to go and what time of year to get a cheap deal? :)

Magnet!! Cracking range, good value for money, and you can get finance on it!!

I bought mine from Magnet about 5 years ago and it still looks pretty good, the quality is better than B & Q, MFI and Ikea. You have to enjoy negotiating though (I do:)) as you will eventually should get it down from the normal price to about 35% of that, i.e if they have the whole kitchen for coming in at £10k you want to be paying around £3.5k.

The problem with Ikea, from anyone I know who has had their kitchens is that they are notoriously bad for missing items either in pack or in complete deliveries and if you are waiting on one thing that is missing before you can finish fitting it you can be sure it will be the all important missing item:twisted:

Ikea kitchens rock

I got a nice one from there, but i'm a fussy miss and didn't like the worktops, so got that from B&Q. Also got the oven and appliances separately. You have to fit them yourself though - I got a joiner mate to come and help me out as i'm useless at DIY.

How on earth did you do that? Details please. :)

(loving the way everyone wants to talk about kitchens but no one can give two ****s about the essential mix!)

Ikea kitchens are really nice, and I am not an Ikea fan normally.
Maybe go for an Ikea kitchen but go for some nice smeg or neff appliances to make it all look sushee. 8)

find a friend that has a working relationship with one of these companies like Magnet, Howdens etc

account holders will be able to get massive discounts for you

top tip: sell your old kitchen on ebay. There's always someone that will want to buy it, and it's cheaper than paying for it to be taken away.

Otherwise I know nothing about kitchens except my dad got an ikea one and kitted it out with a nice surfacetop and posh appliances.

Basically take the usual price, they usually have a sale on that which instantly reduces everything by half. Personally I then spend time with the sales guy going through the prices one by one and point out which parts are very expensive (IMO) and maybe suggest leaving all those bits out. Then pretend not really bothered or not about ordedering it, say I'll give it some thought and could he/she have another run through the prices as I have seen the cmparable kitchen elsewhere cheaper. It's a competitive world and they want your business so with in reason trhey will usually discount again on top of the sale.

I would point out that this doesn't work for just the odd bits and generally appliances are much lower margin for them so you won't get the same discount level on them.

Someone mentioned Howdens who are well worth looking at, good quality and good prices

sales are on all the time rob

i am gonna be getting a new kitchen soon. i think i will get Ed to come and negotiate for me (also, can you do my lawn at the same time please mate?):)

Maybe we should go kitchen shopping together and insist on a discount for a group purchase.

I can't think of anything more boring than going to Magnet on a weekend tho. :x
