'Growing out' of house music

Discussion under the 'too old for ibiza?' thread confirms that many people are still enjoying the music scene and clubs in ibiza in their 30s, 40s and beyond.

Its funny in that I think people often half-expect that over time something may happen to make them 'grow out' of house music. But if you look at what has happened with rock music, what was once a young thing is cross-genertional, bands play to mixed age groups, glastonbury etc has mixed generations. Theres no reason that people who love house music should lose a taste for it with age

I think what happens as you get a bit older is you increasingly will only go to things you really like - no following a crowd for the sake of it. People who say they have 'grown out' of house/clubbing often never had the love or full appreciation of it in the first place.

exactly!!!! i have friend who were 'into clubbing' for about two years in their twenties... while they were completely brain dead and out every night for those two years... and now they say they are over it.

I liked it for years before I indulged in anything
( just making up for it now ;) )

And still listen to good music every day.. I dont see myself ever not liking it!

yes wise words indeedy

those who fall by the wayside never had faith in the first place!!!!!!!

I'll put my hands up and say although I have been Clubbing for years and like Dance music, it's not my passion like Indie/Rock music. I don't listen to Dance music at home unless Dom has it on, but I'll still enjoy every minute of it in the clubs this summer, just not in the same way as most on this board I guess. 8)

I still love it but I'm a bit more discerning than I used to be.

It used to be on my sound system 24/7 but I've diversified recently.

I tend to hate run of the mill house music these days tho. I'd rather listen to 80s trash.

(and I do.  )

To claw back some musical integrity, I absolutely love the new (even though it's not new at all ) post minimal electro sound - finally music is getting interesting again! Also a lot of the electrotrash stuff from nag nag nag etc is truly brilliant and most of it, like rave, went unnoticed and is now in the archives. The humour is ace.

i don't think it's a case of growing out of the music - more a case of where you react or interact to it.

i've had two passions in life for over 40 years now, my rugby team and the music of black america - what was it dave godin said? 'america's greatest cultural gift to the world.'

i've seen neither passion diminish over the years - i just have a different way of enjoying them. i don't want to stand on a freezing cold terrace bawling and shouting, and i don't want to be in a sweat soaked club with a thousand others and my eardrums shot to pieces.

i want to be sitting in the stand as my team perform, and i want to be in the garden of raco verd with a whiskey con hielo as a jazz combo runs through the herbie hancock songbook.

i know this from experience, not conjecture, and i predict that know matter how many times you say i'll be clubbing till i'm a pensioner, you probably won't be.

(there will of course be a few exceptions to this prediction)

I'm afraid to admit I think I will be.

I went to Nude with my good friend Sandra who is now a grandmother in her mid 40s...I really didn't see her as old either.
Maybe your perception of age changes when you approach 30, I'm not sure.

...I'm not sure I'll go to the Ministry tho (unless it's silver sounds ) because it's already full of kids about half my age.

...and to add to that - I'm back into techno again so I've upped the bpms to the rate they were at when I was 15.

I guess that says it all.

Can you tell I've pulled a sickie today? (I'm actually not that ill but ate a dodgy bit of fish and think I may go trotting at any second )

I'll give you all a bowel update as it happens.

Same here. I only enjoy dance music in the clubs, when I'm at home or wherever I just prefer other things. In my case, during my nightlife warrior years, music was never the purpose or the main thing of the night, so I imagine I was what most of you would consider a second class clubber   Anyway, I agree with Stephen that what changes is the way you experience your passions. It's a matter of time, and as long as you don't loose your passion, it's all good! ;)

Oh, she's great! We danced together for a while (if I remember the evening correctly :?).

I listen to all kinds of stuff at home - house, rock, 80s tunes, chill out, etc. All depends on your mood! (and whether or not the missus is home... she hates rock ).

House is especially good when getting ready to go out or when in need of a bit of cheering up.

I also like going to a club for a good live rock show sometimes, almost as much as I love going to house music nights.

I'll never tire of music, including house. That's for sure :D How I experience it might change, though I don't see many signs of that on the horizon soon!

i listen to nothing but dance music, it's very naughty 8O I keep on meaning to broaden my horizons but I end up spending the money on another mix compilation I want...

I absolutely love love love it, and I can honestly see myself clubbing for a lot longer. I see a lot of 40 year olds out and they all look fine and often seem to be having more fun than the posers who are 20 something
