Anybody gone blonde from dark brown/black??? Something i've always really wanted to do but never dared in case of my hair falling out!!!

I'm off to the Hairdressers on Sat and really want a drastic change!!

I know this has probably been covered a million times but am too lazy to do a search :D

Is your hair bleached blond or naturally that colour? If its bleached then I'd strongly advise against it. They have to dye it twice- once a red colour and then a darker colour over the top, otherwise your hair will go green. Its really hard for them to judge what colour it will end up.

You might be better off opting for slightly darker lowlights to begin with ;)

That's what I was going to say, a good hairdresser would be very reluctant to go from really blonde to really dark in one go and will advise doing it gradually with lowlights.

just saw Barbies post and realised you might be going the other way

My sister had dyed black hair and had it taken up to light brown. If your hair is dyed don't do it! they have to strip the colour off and then redye it. her hair became really brittle and strated snapping off. Go for some highlights if you're determined instead!

I wanted to go from Dark brown to blond - thought it might go brittle - think i'll just plump for a nice chocolate brown colour :D

I did this, and it made my hair extremely dry. I had to condition it 3-4 times a day in order to make it soft. I think if you want to do that, you better have it professionally done or else you might fry your hair. Plus, as a male, I assume my hair is much shorter than yours, so there is more maintenance that is needed for longer hair.

Hi Jessy,

every hairdresser here would say: Don´t do that, if you don´t want to have yellow or orange hair. Dark hair wwill only react with the chemicals til a certain point (most, when your hair is yellow or orange or green-yellow). They won´t get lighter from that point. Thats my experience (I had orange hair)....

DON´T DO IT!!! 8O

While the process can be dangerous, if you have the right colorist, one that you trust and that specializes in blonde then it can be done, especially if your hair isn't dark dark brown. My natural hair color is a very dark brown, almost black. Now I have almost platinum hair. However, you might want to think about cutting a lot off after the process because then it will look healthier. Everyone is right though about having to do it in steps. I went from dark dark brown and my stylist weaved a lot of blonde into my hair to where it actually looked like I was a blonde. Then, 2 months later I came back and she weaved the rest of the brown out and I was a complete blonde.

my natural hair color is dark brown and ive gone blonde on several occasions it has always looked better and been much healthier going in steps then right to blonde. going in steps is the best way!

I went from very dark brown to ash blonde one year during a snowboarding trip. Me and a friend did it to annoy our 'other halfs'

It was great fun until we went out one night in the resort and it just looked dumb, the pair of us stood together. Some oven thought we were 'together'8O

We took it in turns to wear some type of headgear for the rest of the fortnight..

Oh and my hair felt much lighter and had a mind of it's own..

(Until I dyed it back dark and looked like a greek waiter for a month  )

cool thanks guys!!

Nice story mr Jam!!!

I'm definately going to go for it in stages - hair is shortish anyway so don't need to worry about that! :D

me and my pals did it at a holiday camp the same year the romanian team did it at france 98. the results were disatrous. luckily id got speaking to some others on the site whose mum was a hairdresser and managed to use the last of the peroxide to sort mines out (looking back, it must have looked ridiculous). The funniest thing that happened was my mate went into the campsite pool not long after and it turned a funny sickly green tinge. never to be repeated by moi!
