fusion's September 2004 Review

finally after almost completely recovering (physically not emotionally) from my ibiza vacation during september 2004 i sat down and wrote a detailed review.
sorry it took me too long, but my mom always taught me that good things happen to those who wait! :p

the review is rather long so take your time when reading it and don't say i didn't warn you beforehand ;)

it was my second time in ibiza within less than 2 months and i really can't think of a better way to spend the summer!
(it was also the 5th time in ibiza for me in general).

me and 3 other mofos were out on an adventure between the 13th to the 21st of september 2004. an adventure we will never forget.

we booked hotel catalina as our accomodation which lived up to the expectations and reviews i heard from others who've already been there.
the hotel is located in san antonio, right above savannah and is 10 seconds walk from cafe del mar / cafe mambo.

MONDAY, 13TH OF SEPTEMBER 2004

we had a small 1 hour delay in our flight (as usual), and then hiper car rental made sure the delay will continue when arriving to ibiza airport, by stalling us 2 more hours when picking up our car
unlike last month when the few delays made sure i won't make it to DC10, this time nothing could stop me from going there and eventually i did make to DC10! :D
a quick search in the parking lot by the guardia civil (how predicted) and off to the club we go.
we enter the main room at about 18:00 to find loco dice playing some dirty tech-house tunes with an electro touch. among that were spotted a few of this year's main ibiza anthems, such as; 'alex neri - housetrack', 'alter ego - rocker', 'spektrum - kinda new (tiefschwarz remix)'.
a quick jump to the terrace to discover its opened but without any music played there. though the sounds from the main room are so loud that they are easily floating to terrace.
back to the main room to find out cirillo is already playing.
after that tania vulkano takes the lead and proves why she deserves the title 'best ibiza dj' which she won in pacha dj awards 2 weeks ago. she drops one good tune after another and puts the nail in the coffin with 'mylo - drop the pressure'. she also played some wicked tune with a repeating female vocals that go "senyora, senyora". if anyone knows its name please enlighten me.
we leave a bit after 22:00 when the party at DC10 ends, and are on our way to the hotel to get all dressed up for cocoon @ amnesia.

we arrive to amnesia at about 2:00 and enter the main room to catch richie hawtin playing. he starts with some fine minimal techno but it didn't take long until he drops the harder beats who gets the crowd go wild. i was very impressed yet surprised by the high bpm level richie reached, cause i'm used to hear him play much lower on the bpm, though you won't hear me complaining.

meanwhile on the terrace ricardo villalobos plays some micro house to a more chilled croud.
the peak of the night was when hawtin dropped 'alter ego - rocker'. yes it was one of THOSE moments.
the music in the main room ends in the morning and we're off to the terrace where there's still music played by a female dj called magda. 15 mins later and the party comes to an end as we're making our way out of the club and to the hotel.
cocoon was amazing and even had better atmosphere than the cocoon party i attended in early august this year.
first day in ibiza and we're already toasted

TUESDAY, 14TH OF SEPTEMBER 2004

waking up at noon to discover our car is making us problems. off to hiper to switch it with another car, which again takes a few hours
this led me to miss the So... Es Vive pool party and i was very gutted about it.
this also where i decided to end my affair with hiper car rental in the years to come.
in the early evening we're making our way to playa den bossa to experience 'the experience' with carl cox and friends at space.
upon arrival to the parking lot we're hearing the croud roars from the terrace as the sounds of 'eric prydz - call on me' are rushing out from the speakers.
having too much to drink causes me to fade away before even entering the queue. somehow i manage to drag myself to the queue and in there i bump into drew (or so he said :D). then things are already blurred and all i recall is that i had to grab myself in both hands (almost literally) and get something to eat or else i will collapse. some of my friends were already inside the club while some others were too mashed to function or find one another.
after eating, in all my foolishness i decide to have another drink and from there i don't remember anything but the fact i somehow got to my car at about 9:00 in the morning to find my friends waiting for me there.

and speaking of those friends - luckily they were more sober than i was that night as they remembered almost everything from the party and told me that cox was brilliant on the inside. he played tunes such as; 'renato cohen vs. tim deluxe - just kick (carl cox remix)', 'adam beyer & jesper dahlback - number in between', 'carl cox - give me your love (valentino kanzyani mix)', 'alter ego - rocker', 'eric prydz - call on me' (*again*) and so on.
i was also informed there was a cool electronic drums player who accompanied the music that was played.
at the end of the night carl cox thanked the croud for yet another great season and then the party came to a close.
this was one of the most messed up nights of my whole clubbing career, which is long enough. though lesson is learnt and from then on i tried not to get too wasted before entering a club.
if it wasn't for my friends i would still have one big blackout from that night.
and to this i say - what are friends for? :)

WEDNESDAY, 15TH OF SEPTEMBER 2004

waking up at noon and doing the usual things that ibiza has to offer during daytime (shopping, coastline walks, food consumption, etc).
at night we're heading to subliminal pre-party at mambo where we enjoy a sangria while hearing benny benassi and erick morillo playing in the background.
at around 2:00 we hit pacha for subliminal sessions. we enter and see benassi is in the booth who's dropping some sick electro sounds. strangely we didnt hear him playing any of his recent familiar productions.
after him it's john carter's turn to show us what he got in a rather short set.
then its morillo's turn to go up. he's being him usual self with his repeatitive combination of acapellas and filters thru the set.
he played some tunes we expected him to play like 'harry romero - what happened?', 'erick morillo, harry romero, & jose nunez - dancin (fuzzy hair remix)', 'erick morillo feat. audio bullys - break down the doors (remix)', and the raising closing parties anthem; 'gadjo - so many times' to the delight of the croud (and myself :p).
during the set he surprises us with some bizzar new edit of a classic 80's tune (no, not 'sweet dreams'), but 'elektrochemie lk vs. softcell - schall vs. tainted love'. from this moment on the croud was completely captured by the man with the plan - morillo.
during some point of the night i meet a guy who a few days later i found out was also a member in ibiza spotlight forums and goes by the username 'matack' (nice to meet you, take good care of my flashy ring and thanks for the southern comfort! )

yet another great subliminal party has come to an end and as we're feeling a bit more energetic we decide to head to space for la troya carry on (about this you'll read under tomorow's title).

THURSDAY, 16TH OF SEPTEMBER 2004

the morning starts with a cheer - the cheer of the space terrace croud as dj oliver takes control on the decks. yes we're already inside space for la troya's carry on.
the club isn't too full but not that empty either and has the proper party vibe.
we dance our arses off on the terrace and then during a quick sally to the inside we catch a dj called armin (not van buuren) playing 'alter ego - rocker'. that attracted us to stay a bit in the inside until it shut at 13:00 or so. then all the crowd were flowing to the terrace where the atmosphere was at its peak.
dj oliver was still playing. his style was ranging between a combination of new and old funky house tunes with many ibiza 04 anthems thrown into the mix. the croud lost his mind when he played 'mori kante - yeke yeke'.

since cream closing @ amnesia was on our agenda for later on that night we left space at about 16:00 and went back to the hotel to catch some much needed sleeping hours.

after catching some not enough sleeping hours  we woke up a bit hazy but that didn't prevent us from doing some useful activities in san an. after that we got prepared and were on our way to cream @ amnesia.

when entering we caught the last few minutes of gareth wyn's set and then the 'number one dj in the world' grabbed the wheel and started spinning.
tiesto played the things i expected him to play - ibiza 04 trance anthems, as some of those are his own productions and remixes; 'tiesto - love comes again', 'tiesto - just be', 'william orbit - barbers adagio for strings (tiesto remix), 'radiohead - street spirit (tiesto remix)'. the croud was having it big time!
but the night as always belonged to paul van dyk. he took the lead (literally) at about 4:00 and swept everyone off thier feet with a fantastic set.
my memory can come up with the tunes 'paul van dyk - for an angel', 'paul van dyk - crush (remix)', 'paul van dyk - time of our lives (remix)', 'fatboy slim - star 69 (pvd edit)', 'amiel - lovesong (scumfrog vocal mix)', 'reflekt - need to feel loved', that were played among many others.

he finished off at about 8:30 and received alot of love from the croud that was expressed by great cheers for some long minutes. everyone wanted to stay and just begged for more and more from this legendary german dj/producer.

great end to a great season for cream @ amnesia! 8)
(no i ain't a trance kid, i'm just saying it as i see it)

FRIDAY, 17TH OF SEPTEMBER 2004

I can't wait for the weekend to begin... and indeed it began! :)
friday is here and tonight we've got another closing party planned. this time its defected closing @ el divino.
though we still had plenty of time to do other things during daytime and a few hours beforehand we were walking around san antonio, eating in david's pizzeria and doing some other regular activities.
when the evening stroke we headed to cafe mambo for the pre party of pure pacha. i guess we arrived too late as pete tong was already gone (or was he a no show at his own pre party?) and another pete welcomed us - pete gooding. he played some balearic sounds and got us all into the mood for a party tonight. a drink... another one... then another one and we're ready to get defected :p
we hit the club at about 2:00 to find the immortal bora bora resident dj spinning.
dj gee is as smiley as always and throwing some chunky beats from his recent bora bora compilation. tunes like 'tom neville & gee moore - put your foot down', 'gee, pedro & david - electrogee', 'gee presents slam dunk funk - slam dunk funk' got us jumping up and down from the early moments of the night. gee can surely work the croud and not just at his own temple, but also at the big 7's temple (who as we know were probably the ones responsible for the demise of gee's temple  ).
then its kid creme and junior jack turn to give it what they got as they go for a few hours back2back set. they played the expected summer anthems while throwing some of thier own productions/remixes into the mix. near the last 2 hours of thier set some MC joins them and lifts up the croud a bit. the opinions about this MC are varied - some liked him, others didn't.
all in all he did his work and most people were satisfied by his performance.
the party ended towards 7:30 and after taking some funny pics with the stars of the night we were making our way to the hotel, happy and joyful from yet another splendid closing party! :D

SATURDAY, 18TH OF SEPTEMBER 2004

waking up at noon very hazy and lazy but since we don't wanna kill this fine day by sleeping we decide to hit a few beaches. we start with calla tarida and then onto cala bassa to spend the rest of the afternoon there. few hours later we're already on our way to ibiza town to do some shopping and consume some food.
its then when we find out carl cox is playing in a club called lola, but since we already heard him a few nights ago at space we decide to stick with the original plan and goto defmix @ pacha.
though before that we're attending yet another pre party at mambo, and this time it's defmix's.
guess who welcomes us behind the dj booth at mambo? (instead of the resident/guest djs of defmix) - yes u got that right, it's pete gooding again .
we stay there for a while and then we hit the roads for pacha.
as we enter the club hector romero is warming up while the other 2 djs of the night, sander kleinenberg and satoshi tomiie, are also found in the dj booth changing notes (? ;) ).
hector finishes and then sander goes up. he's playing some fine melodic progressive beats. he didn't surprise me when throwing one of last year's anthems - 'sander kleinenberg - work to do', which went down very well. then he DID surprise me when fullfilling my request earlier that night and dropping 'sander kleinenberg - my lexicon' which went down even better! (boy did i miss this classic tune).
the overplayed 'spektrum - kinda new (tiefschwarz remix)' was also played and one of sander's recent productions from his latest album ('renaissance presents this is everybody too') is also recalled being played that night by him - 'sander kleinenberg - the right time'.
after sander satoshi tomiie goes up to play and kicks us with the harder and darker side of progressive house. too bad he didn't fill my request and failed to play the best tune that came out of GU019 - 'satoshi tomiie - love in traffic'.
all in all defmix @ pacha was a nice party warmup for sundays @ space, however now its bedtime as we have maximum 4 hours of sleep before we'll hit the roads again.

SUNDAY, 19TH OF SEPTEMBER 2004

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE SPACE!
these were the first few words i shouted to my friends as i'm waking up those sleepy bastards at this fine noon
slowly but safely they wake up and an hour later we're already in space's parking lot.
the sun is shinning and those great sounds from the terrace speakers are erupting.
we rush our way in to make it during the 'allowed time' to gain a one time pass out bracelet.
when entering the terrace i think it was paul woolford & dave beer on the decks, however i didn't hear that much from thier set. then it was tom novy's turn who played the usual winning formula of funky electo house mixed with summer anthems.
during that time on the terrace i bump into a few spotlight casualties - barbie, tmt, lynch, spunkymonkey, wimpers (and megs). nice to meet u guys :p

a surprise happened when yousef came up after tom novy (he wasn't listed in the lineup) and played really well!
it didn't take him too long to drop 'soul central - strings of life' and 'gadjo - so many times', then the roof was blown away. the maddenning croud was having it in one of THOSE moments when u feel u can never be happier in life :D.
king of space took on the lead at about 21:00. he takes the crowd by storm when dropping 'the bangles - walk like an egiptian (bushwacka remix)'.
then he continues to play some summer anthems (anyone said 'planet funk - the switch (king unique pushin vocal mix)' ;) ) with a few of his own recent productions like 'steve lawler - lost', 'steve lawler - out at night'.
he nails the bomb when finishing his set with 'bombdogs - i can't explain (steve lawler summer of love mix)'.
it's already midnight and the terrace was supposed to be shut, but where's hottie lottie?
there she is!... for the first time ever (in all of my sundays @ space terrace sessions) the music on the terrace continues after midnight.
it was lottie's turn to bring us to new heights. she played a well built short electro set and finished off almost an hour after midnight.

it was time to use our one pass out opportunity and so we did.
we seize this time to grab a bite to eat in the pasta-pizzera restaurant across the road from space and have a few drinks in between.
at about 2:00 we hit space entrance again but this time we'll bless the main room with our presence :D
when we enter we catch the end of craig richards set who drops some fine micro house sounds.
then it was tiefschwarz brothers who took control of the decks and threw alot of electro-tech tunes into the mix. they seem to get very energetic especially when playing thier own productions/remixes. it was THIER time when they played 'spektrum - kinda new (tiefschwarz remix)' and the croud was loving every beat of it.
aldrin is on next and introduces us to the progressive side of house. he even finishes off with techno.

another long sundays @ space session has come to a great end.
with our last powers we drag ourselve to the hotel for a few hours of sleep.

MONDAY, 20TH OF SEPTEMBER 2004

as we wake up i'm deciding to introduce my virgin friends to an hystorical side of the island - bora bora
we arrive to bora bora to find the place has no music as expected and there are hardly any people in the area or on the beach nearby. i get emotional and (almost) shed some tears.
as a compensation we went to get our stomachs filled at km5 :D

being it our last night on the island we hit mambo for the last time. tonight it's release yourself pre party featured there.
it didn't came as a surprise NOT to find roger sanchez behind the decks but our beloved pete gooding again.
a bit later we're already on our way to cocoon closing party @ amnesia.
we first enter the terrace and bump into tania vulcano who wears her clubbing suit tonight and is just having it on the dancefloor.
meanwhile on the dj booth john aquaviva and ricardo villalobos are playing an amazing back2back tech house set.
we stay on the terrace for a while and then go and check who's mastering the main room. it's richie hawtin who this time plays a bit softer than last week.
after richie's minimal techno set alter ego took the lead and performed live. try imagining what happened when they dropped 'alter ego - rocker'. i've never seen the croud go that wild at cocoon as they did in those very moments .
sven vath was on next for the closing set that night. he literally killed us with some of the best electro and raw techno.
the party ended a bit after 9:00 and we hit the hotel as we had an early morning flight to catch.
a top ending to a top party with a top dj in a top club! ... during a top ibiza vacation that had just came to an end

the good thing is that we don't have to be back home to israel yet cause we have 1.5 more days to spend in catalunya. but that already belongs to another seperate story ;).

That should sum up my ibiza 2004 summer season.
Hope you enjoyed my review, c u next year!

ok, so this is a bit beside the point and all, so please join me on my tangent for a moment... :)

when I saw 'kleinenberg', I thought, hey isn't his name 'KLEINberg'??? so, as it just so happens, I had Sander's GU NuBreed CD in, so I looked closer at the cover and noticed 'KLEINEberg' ... so, I'm like, well, I'm half right, I guess... I then I look at the side label and saw 'KLEINENberg' (!) then said, hey, wait a second... many other places seem to correspond with fusion's spelling, which leads me to say  can you believe they spelled this dudes name wrong on the cover of his CD ?!?!

ok, back to review kudos's and such...

excellent review!!!
We could have met @ Circo Loco, Space & Cocoon Closing Party.
I couldn't agree more with your anthems list (and you're the only one mentionning Coca & Villa - La Noche. I looooooove that tune, makes me almost cry)

definitely one of the best reviews i've ever read! great work fusion!!! i'm sure you had a great (but tough) week (i've also been to cream closing and wls on the 19th)... :D 8)

Completely agree...tune of the summer for me

Question about guardia civil searches.... How thorough of a search do they do? Simple pat down? Or peak through your pockets and wallets?

I only bumped once into them (at DC10 parking as mentioned) and in that case they searched any imaginable place in my car and also in my pockets and wallet.
They didn't strip search me if thats what you're getting to.
In their favor i would say they weren't aggressive and actually kinda polite.

Thanks, Fusion. I was curious because I'd say at least 50% of club goers have something to hide, if you catch my drift. So I'm wondering if these searches are just for show, or are they really looking to bust people who have something on them. When they do find something, do they arrest the people or just take it away? It's bad PR to do the ladder, considering that clubbing is Ibiza's main industry. But I've read a few horror stories.

I have no idea if they arrest the people or just take it away as i was never caught with anything illegal on me.

But i guess it depends on alot of factors (amount u carry on you, the guardia civil's mood, etc).

Another blinding review from fusion, long may they continue. It's not suprising it took you a while to recover from this jaunt :D :D

I think i'm still recovering from this one. Doubt i'll ever fully recover and go back to my usual (?) self ;)
