What is everyones prefered programme for mixing mp3s into a set alongside vinyl? Everyone seems to recommend something different but I've seen the older (1.5) version of Final Scrach being sold for £220 which seems very reasonable.

This is kind of related to the other thread about downloading too - my prediction is that by the end of 2006 there will be a lot of up-front tracks only available on digital download, as a lot of the dance music labels go to digital-only to survive.

For digital DJing with MP3, Ableton is king, becuase it's not a mixing package, is music performance software. You can remix, loop, compose and use a multitude of effects on-the-fly - it's pretty amazing.

If you just want a way of playing MP3s alongside vinyl in a set, I'd go with FS or serato. If you want to really utilise the potential that digital djing afford, go with Ableton. Check out http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=products.filter&ID=live for a bunch of case studies on how ableton is changing they way people perform music :)

For 'general' DJing I have been using Visiosonics PCDJ Red for four years now. It's more appropriate for playing various genres covering over 50 years of music. My main residency is request driven and can be anything like house, hard house, trance, R&B, disco, etc.

For more specific single genre DJing like house music, then Abelton is definitely the way forward. I'm currently setting up Abelton to do a section of my night, say half an hour at a time. But, the rest of the night will have to be a mixture of PCDJ and vinyl. Abelton requires preparation before a gig whereas PCDJ does not.
