that's all i have to say!

Ah, you can set your holiday itinery by French strikes. That's why I avoid July and August, if I want a camping holiday I don't want it at Gatwick.

Was in Formentera last October when I got a text from Ryanair saying our flight back to Manchester (scheduled the following day) was cancelled due to a French Airtraffic Controllers' strike. Couldn't get us on to another flight home for another 3 days.

Calling my boss from Illetes beach to tell him I couldn't get home (and pretending to be annoyed) was probably the highlight of my year.

It's fine late in the season when rooms are cheap and available, wouldn't like it to happen mid-August though!!
On saying that, if soemone had to find another £500++ to cover three days accommodation due to strikes, would insurance cover it? I'd certainly be on the phone to youthinkyourecoveredhaha.com

You can't get compensation due to 'extraordinary circumstances' but the airlines are still on the hook for reimbursing additional accommodation costs for cancelled flights within the EU. Which is likely one of the reasons why the French ATCs drive Michael Leary apoplectic...

Probably a different story when the UK leaves the EU, though...
Indeed. I've read that after Brexit the uK will give even more powers to passengers, but I wouldn't even put someone else's shirt on it. Until then - fly from Dublin!!
In the hundreds of trips to the continent I've been lucky enough only to have one flight cancelled - when the radar system was down in Holland all flights from Schipol were cancelled indefinately (and it was just before internet use became standard so little way to check alternatives) so I headed for the Hook of Holland and caught the ferry back to the UK.
Not so easy from Ibiza; if flights were cancelled for some days as happened with the ash cloud, I suppose a ferry to Barcelona and then train is possible, maybe Denia/Valencia would be a longer route but quicker?
But I suppose it ends up being quicker if you stay put on the island and hope your company can organise a flight for us. It's the one and only drawback of Ibiza, it's a bit remote if there are transport problems.
