Flight then accomodation when you get there?

I know someone last year who got a flight out alone in August to meet friends then booked into Hotel Brisa (cheaply i think - paid less than those on packages/early bookings) when he arrived.

My friend wants to do this this year, has anyone every done it? How easy is it to get accomodation? Is it always cheaper?
