Fibre Broadband - anyone got it yet?

Anyone been tempted into fibre broadband yet?

We have the option of Virgin and BT and now Sky (my current phone and bb provider) are offering it for an extra £10 per month. They want a £52 set up charge though which I thought was a bit cheeky.

We have a Smart TV, 3 computers, an iphone and 3 ipod touch in our gaff so me is thinking the more mb the better, but are the claims of 30mb+ a bit hopeful?

Would Sky use the BT phone line or the underground cables?

I thought Virgin had been using fibre optic for many years for their internet connectivity?

The thought of fibre optic bb has me salivating. We don't have and are unlikely ever to get mains gas out here so fibre optic connectivity is some way off ......:x

Go for it, dsd.

Yes. You usually tend to get much less than that. It's also how far you are from the exchange (although much less of an issue on fibre) and how many people share your connection. It's also dependant on if it's Fibre to the door, or fibre to the exchange. (If I recall, alot of Virigin fibre optic is to the exchange)

If it's fibre to the door, they'll lay a separate cable from the exchange cabinet to you. Else it'll travel over the telephone wire from the exchange.

I think I would be a fool to not get it.

Cheers for that Ikoda. Just didnt want it the cables running from the street. We have had cable in our area for about 15 years and I used to have C&W for my TV and phone but the line kept dropping out. Since I have had Sky(BT) line there has been nil problemo.

We have 24Mb Fibre optic here. Fibre to the door for cable tv, landline phone and internet.

It pings at between 20 and 23 and tbh speed becomes irrelevant at this level.

If you are referring to the new fibre optic service then yes you will get 30mpbs plus on even uploads!

If you are referring to an ADSL2 service then the information in this post is correct regarding how close you are to the exchange.

If it is true fibre to door you would be crazy not to get it at that price especially if speed is important.

Fibre to the door is quite rare in the UK I believe. Certainly for personal use.

Virgin is fibre to the cabinet (exchange) then over a coaxial cable (more heavily shielded than your average phone cable) so you get better speeds, but the further from the exchange, the more the speed drops. They also have quite a high contention ratio I believe, but don't quote me on that.

SKY and BT are also fibre to the cabinet then switches to a conventional phone line. Distance to the exchange is much more important here.
