Back in July2005 three friends from Birmingham who were tired of the scene in Birmingham and having to travel to London to listen to the music they wanted to hear decided to put on their own party. Thus Below was born.
"The Sunflower Lounge" hosted the first below party. This intimate venue provided the perfect avenue to launch a new dance music scene on Birmingham that was heavily influenced by the promoters experiences at DC10 in Ibiza and underground house clubs across the UK. The party was a huge success but the lack of a good underground venue, which was big enough to accommodate the increasing number of people into the scene, put things on hold.
Over a year past without a below party as the promoters continued on the seemingly fruitless quest to find a suitable venue.
In May 05 Below decided that The Rainbow in Birmingham would be their home. Dropping the full original name of Below the Beltz to just Below Below decided that with some hard work a Sunday daytime party would be possible and thus a date at The Rainbow was booked.
The opening party was rammed, with people glad to escape from the monotonous music of Birmingham premier club nights. It now seemed that below were gathering a devoted following of like-minded people.
IDJ Magazine, DJ magazine and the Metro soon got to hear about the party and regular appearances complimented with rave reviews encouraged people from out of town to take Monday off work and make the trip to Digbeth.
Below believe in the ethos of introducing new talent and have gave regular sets to Tom Craven, Dave Sandford (together form the duo DAT Elektronique), Adam Proctor, Grant Loftus, Neill, Toby Wiltshire, Ed Davenport, Dave Martin (Technique) Matt Styles (Crosstown Rebels), the list goes on.
Guests have included Damian Lazarus, Brooks, DJ Silversurfer, Matt Tolfrey, The Freaks, Scarlett Etienne, Simon Baker, Jamie Jones, Anja Schneider, PBR Streetgang, James Priestley and Ivan Smagghe.
There was a high demand for Below to do a Saturday night with the increased number of people wanting to go to the party but not being able to do a Sunday. Again Below searched for a venue and found a little gem and Saturday November 26th Below opened the doors to a warehouse and 600 ravers turned out to listen to DJ Silversurfer and Brooks.
The success of the warehouse party led to the venue being booked New Years Eve. The party was a sell out and a hell of a party. DAT Elektronique were truly amazing and Matt Tolfrey teared it up with the residents Ross T, Adam Shelton and Neill playing their consistent quality tough house.
