my boss told me off this morning because i left 10 minutes earlier that i normally do, and he told me "working hours are 9-5" and i was like  i never get credit for coming early when people have early morning meetings and stuff and graduately they are turning me into a secretary more than an assistant. I really dont like this.
what to do?

Give him a Nod Funk You...

You nod but repeat the ruder version of Funk You over and over in your head as you do so. Smiling is optional. Then spend at least 10 minutes of his time looking for another job. ;)

My boss said exactly the same thing to me about a month ago, i was working through my lunch break and leaving at 4.30 instead of 5.30 and he reminded me what my working hours are. I made up a story about having to go doctors and he said he doesnt mind occasionally. Thing is, other people on my section come in at 8 and go at 4  and theres going to be times when i have to work through my break to get things done .

IG you should bring it up in your appraisal like im going to or just go and have a chat with him about it now.

Nothing.

We have EXACTLY the same problem in our office!

Contracted hours are from 9-5.30 and there's a clause in it that says, 'Extra hours will sometimes be necessary and are unpaid' (blatantly illegal).

The w*nker boss makes us start at 8.30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays (AND has the cheek to ridicule us for being late for these UNPAID meetings - "You're letting your team down."  )

On top of that, he complains about the 'mass exodus at 5.30' which makes us feel guilty about leaving - despite the fact that there's no acknowledgement of the fact that we come in early for him two days a week.

Actually - I don't mind going the extra mile at work but this sort of school teacher mentality just makes me want to curl one out on his desk.

The answer - these people have no idea how to earn respect so grin and bear it, give yourself a time limit of 6 months in the job and lazily look for another. ;)

(Fook - just realised how much that must've been playing on my mind! Thanks for the cathartic thread! ;) )

I'm so lucky... i've been coming in at 10 for months now (our hours are 9:30-6:30) and still no warning... just an occasional jibe from my department head who is technically (though not factually) my boss

I keep waiting to get a nasty letter from our VP, but it hasn't come 8)
(quickly goes to find piece of wood to knock on :? )

I don't usually leave until 7:30 so I don't feel too guilty about it.

but seriously. im 29 soon (jusus 8O ) and i still have to be taught off like some kinda school kid. he never aknowledges when im in early and when i do good stuff. its like i do 20 good deeds a day and the 1 thing they notice is the one thing that could have been done diffeently!    i feel sick yo my stomacke sitting here!

God chick I don't blame you - I was 5 minutes late back from lunch one day and I got a right telling off! Then this other woman swans in 50 mins late and they don't bat an eyelid! Its one rule for one here! I hate it!!!!

It really sounds like you should quit, I-G... or insist on a raise that would make the aggravation more palatable!

If your anything like me, the only way that your going to feel better is to ask if you can have a word with him and tell him how you feel. You tell him that your not a child and that you sometimes come in early so it should be allowed that you leave early now and then too.

i wrote him an email saying simply: i will pay more attention to my workhours, but please also note i have left occasionally earlier the days i also got in earlier to help people out because of meetings ect. to your informationl.

this should say in a polite way im not happy about being told off

I know what you mean it really sucks - I NEVER treat the people under me with contempt. I have always found that if you show them respect they tend to give it back and there's a lot to be said for a happy working environment.
He sounds like a dick - so funk him and spend all day on here :D

I'm supposed to do 40 hours/ week but now a days I'm doing an average of 50/week
Doing so many extra hours nobody gets moody if I'm five minutes late.
When my big boss is not in the office I can flexibilize my lunch time, usually I have a quick lunch and I leave at 6 but sometimes I meet friends for lunch and I spend two hours in the sun so I leave at 7
