Fear of Flying

Anyone else suffer from this? If so what do you recommend taking?

Took low dose of Betas last year, didn't work!

I used to LOVE flying, always had to have the window seat, always had my nose pressed against the window for landing/takeoff etc! I always got a bit nervous with turbulence and stuff but generally I didnt mind flying at all.
THEN - I was on a flight home from Scotland on my own, and it was SUCH a bad flight! I dont know why because it was July and only an hour's flight but the plane was jumping all over the place! I was a nervous wreck by the time I got off and ever since then I've been really nervous flying  I've started to think about it a lot more too, like "how can something that big and heavy possibly stay in the air?" ARRRGHHH! It makes me nervous just thinking about it 8O

valium !!!
:)

You'd need a prescription though, they're illegal otherwise.

I tried the wonderful Valium last year, :) I didn't try it for flying though. Will the Dr prescribe it? (I got it off a friend, who got that off a friend!)

not sure whether a doctor would prescribe it for flying, there are probably other things. Valium can often be prescribed for things like back pain.
The only problem with obtaining it from other sources, is that I think you'd effectively be done for trafficking if you took it through an airport - it's a class C drug.

i love flying.

is nowt to be scared of.

just relax and try not to think about crashing and you'll be fine 8)

I used to get a bit nervous, though I'd say I stopped short of being scared.

I usually just down a couple of pints pre-flight and then settle into a nice nap on the plane

Oh they do they do and thank god! i have been prescribed it for the past three years. its only a very low dose. though my doctor did suggest last time that i try to tackle my fear in other more natural ways. think he is worried im becoming addicted! your not really supposed to drink with it but i was quite nervous last year and downed a few glasses of wine before take off. my mate also decided to take one of my tablets jus for the fun off it (she is a perfectly calm flyer!) we were both high as kites by the time we got up in the air. i was even laughing when we had some turbulence!

but obviously im not endorsing the drug or anything.  i'd suggest one of those fear of flying courses. im going to do it just as soon as i have some money.

statistically you have more chance of dying on the way to the airport than on the plane itself.:?

i love flying:D

I have read self help books on flying before.

ALL I WANT IS SOMETHING TO PUT ME OUT :)

Stu - I didn't realise Valium was a class C! I took 20 to Ibiza on the ferry last year 8O

yeah, you need a prescription for it, it's a controlled substance.

Basically.....on short hops the planes dont have the time to climb to max cruising height ie 35-45'000 feet, which is basically above the weather, so as a result will be thrown around a bit by the weather, also the skies above Britain are home to some pretty complex weather systems due to our proximty to the gulf stream etc.

And the principle of flight is that the shape of the wings creates differing air veliocity & pressure. Being low pressure above, high pressure below, this creating lift.......and they will stay aloft thanks to physics!!! ;)

   well it sorted me out (but I'm all over the place)
He also shares his name with the campest man on TV!

I freaked out on a flight to portugal in 2004. a bit of turbulance and i had pins and needles down half my body, my speech sounded like it was impaired and i started crying. the air hostess had to sit with me for an hour and i was humiliated. little kids were watching me and they were fine. I still keep flying though, don't let it ruin your holiday and just put up with it!!!!!

I've flown a lot but I still hate flying... its the longer distances that bug me... the 10 hour flights... such along time to be in the air... I hate take offs, if somethings going to happen, thats usually when it does!

Still usually choose a window seat!

I fly from the UK to Dublin every week for work now.

It used to bother me a lot, even to the point where I upped my life insurance to make sure Mrs Jam and Mini Jam would be ok financially if something happened.

The on one flight in January, I noticed just how many other people had some level of fear on the flight, and I stopped feeling like I was the only one with nerves.

Nowadays I must admit that I'm quite complacent about flying and it doesn't bother me at all.

:)
