[Theres alot more to be had here at sensible money. eg 3 years ago 200,000 pounds would only buy you a small apartment here. Now it can buy you a small villa with land and pool.

Where's that? 8O 8O 8O 8O

Javea/Denia/Moraira alot of the Costa Blanca really, why does that sound cheap ??

No, but it's exactly oposite to Catalunya, in three years the prices have gone up up up

Which one does Toms office work with ? Any here on the Costa Blanca ??

Don't ask me difficult questions like that  ;) I'll ask him tonight, I just know that he said it's an easy way to do it if you're living in UK cos we've talked about it before and various people he works with have done and it's gone without a hitch.

I think it was because when the euro arrived people had alot of cash(pesetas) to spend before they were invalid. That combined with a very good rate of exchange and a relatively low interest rate both here and the Uk, made the property scene boom here.
Then the last 15/18 months interest rates have gone up considerably in the UK and also the new tax law in Germany, has made the prices become more sensible. Plus 15 years ago here there were 6 estate agents, now theres over 100 8O !!

The end of la peseta was mad. Anyway, here in Catalunya prices are still going too high. Flats in a "bad" area around Barcelona that five years ago where 50.000€ are now a days 120.000€ minimum  We are the most expensive city in the country :?

BTW, how did you end up at Javea?

Dont' get me wrong property is still expensive (compared to 5 years ago), but nowadays people are willing to negotiate, and there are deals to be had.

My parents brought me here for a new life !! Can't complain though, I love living in Spain. I can't see me moving to another country in the near future.

Are you a proper Catalonian ? Or are you from elsewhere ??

Ah, cool! I needed to spend 6 months in the UK to decide that I definitly was born in the right place ;)
My two grandads and one of my grandma where from here and my other grandma is from Alicante so, 3/4 of my blood is catalan :D

I was talking to they guy I rent my usual villa off in Ibiza (because I want to buy that one) he was telling me that he had it valued last year - the price they told him totally surprised him. I asked him if he would consider selling it to us, but he said at the moment no, this was mainly because although the price the agent told him it was worth was brilliant - he said its not worth that much and he reckons it wont sell it at that price - he has seen so much property go up for sale at these high prices and they are just not selling at all and nobody will drop their prices to get a quick sale.

So, in the short term, he is just going to carry on renting the villa out as he makes a good income from it.

Seems to me that the market is stagnant in Ibiza at the moment.... ready for a crash perhaps?? (But I doubt it....) Going to leave it another 6 months or so and just keep an eye on the market.....

How bizarre, I've been looking into this recently also. There seems to be some real bargains to be had on the mainland. Id love to move to Ibiza, but the prices for tiny properties are a lot more in comparison to similar sized properties elsewhere in Spain. I'll be waiting a few years anyway, but the way I see it is like this - why buy a property in a miserable rain soaked scottish town if i can avoid it? theres nothing really keeping me here, no wife, no kids. Im quite serious about making this move, but Im gonna spend the next couple of years learning Spanish and may take a course to allow me to teach English abroad (could be handy).

Phill, Spain is a very diverse country. Mainland could be seen as lots of small countries together, with very different characteristics in all senses (weather, culture, people, economy). There's lots of places I would love to have a house but there's lots others that are a big no no for me, if you know what I mean ;)

Yeah I suppose that goes without saying - but recently I've been looking around, and as much as I like where I live, I feel its time for a change. A big change. Whats the point in me moving to a big city down South or Glasgow or Edinburgh, only to find I still haven't found what Im looking for? Im not renting again, next move will be into my own property :)

And where would you fancy to buy besides Ibiza? :D

I have no idea. In my head I'm picturing a little rural villa but not too far off the beaten track. My geography of Spain is non-existent, as is my knowledge of local culture and customs :?

And other than Spain, well, only other place to really tempt me to move away is the South Of France, as I know people down there, and I've been a few times.

Definately !!

Obviously the naerer you are to the coast the more expensive it is. But saying that there are villages here that are only 15/20 mins from the beach, and they are upto 25/30 % cheaper.

Unofrtunatly, the spanish coastline are totally spoiled, except Cabo de Gata and the very north of Costa Brava, there are buildings everywhere and each twon looks like the next one :?

Villages in the inside are more charming, quieter, cheaper and you don't get tourists' army

I would definitly get a villa in Cabo de Gata if it wasn't that far from Barcelona

Its something to think about for the future definately. Next year I'll get a better holiday allocation (new job just now :S). I'd quite like to combine a trip to the mainland with next years 1st Ibiza trip (I wanna go twice!). Could maybe even spend just a couple of days driving around in a hire car, couple of days in Barcelona, followed by a week in Ibiza for the opening parties etc. :D
