What are your favourite bars that you could take older kids into?
I havn't seen many aroundthe west-end.
Are there any that do comedy and the like?
 
Yep round the Bay seems to be the place to go with kids... get on left hand side of the road from Hotel Hawai and just walk. you'll find dozens of Bars what kids can go in.
 
sadly, the totally naff but thoroughly entertaining family bar (open 22 hours!) that was exactly the type of thing you're looking for, no longer exists - that be zinema.

like others have said, around the bay is the best bet. donnegans and pink panther and the like.
