Use Firefox. Internet Explorer has loads of security issues, and is made by just Microsoft. Firefox is 'open source' which means there are many, many developers working on it constantly which makes it safer and more robust. it blocks pop-ups, and even has the manners to ask you is you would like to see a pop-up. I've been using it to do with my job since the program was not even released to the public. It's the best browser I have ever used.

Download the windows service pack 2, pop-up blocker from websites is perfect.
And use spybot and ad-aware to get rid of the ones on your computer
