Exercise (serious thread)

Thinking of going the gym soon (seriously).

Decided that instead of pushing it and trying to do myself in every weekend Ill see if the healthy option will make me feel better.

Heard people say they always feel better after workouts - Does this work for anyone who keeps fit on here?

Got loads on my mind at the moment as well and hoping this will make me forget about things which are totally getting me down.
Is running/cardio etc good for your mental/happy state of mind as well?

Serious replies only please

Thanks in advance

Running is absolutely the best thing for my mental state. I do about two or three 10k races per month (even on Boxing Day!!!) i find that it is really good for keeping my strength up, both physically and emotionally.

i really think both running and exercising at the gym is good for your body and your soul!

running after a hard and stressful day with meetings, presentations etc...is really relieving! during the first ten minutes you still keep on thinking about things you've done at work, things you have to do and so on...and (so it is to me at least) sometimes you really get good ideas! after a while your thoughts about work fade away and you just enjoy running over the fields, running through the woods, breathe fresh air and everything. after you get back you're really relaxed and chilled...and, of course, a bit tired or exhausted (depending on how long and fast you run...). drink lots of water afterwards, eat lots of carbs afterwards (pasta or rice is best) and then just relax! (and don't go running with an empty stomach, eat a banana or something similar before, but no later than one hour prior to departure!).
maybe i should add here that i run regularly and that i've already run a marathon. so when it gets to competitions, you really have to take things serious. but even if you go running for half an hour or an hour, it's really a good thing! sometimes when weather is crap outside you really have to push yourself to put your running shoes on and get off your sofa. but then, after about 10 minutes of running through the rain, you'll love it. you don't care anymore that you're totally wet. just make sure you wear the right clothes (breathable stuff). the hot shower after your run is just perfect, and when you make an ice-cold-shocker at the end, you will stay warm for the next 12 hours. and don't forget stretching after getting back...i easily spend 20 mins for stretching!

as for gym, it's the same feeling after a stressful day. two things are different: you don't get that nature feeling (which is a bit sad) but on the other hand, if you exercise often, you will really see results in the way your body changes ;)

i do sports 3-5 times per week and it's no problem (sometimes i can't make it because i don't have the time to), just look that your body gets enough recreation between the workouts! your body will need more sleep than before, but i swear you will feel better and healthier.

more questions? just ask!

nish...........goin the gym does make you feel better about yourself, mentally as well as physically.

the only advice i'd give ya is to make sure that when you commit to going to the gym, you can actually organise it so that it fits into your timetable.

for me its perfect cos i go in my lunch hour from work, which would just be time wasted if I didn't go the gym. so basically cos i've not got anything better to do, I'm keen to go. however, I know people who have signed up and said they'll go after work but so many things can happen in one day that could prevent you from going (feeling tired, stay late at work, meet friends, goin out).

overall, even a 30-45 min workout every couple of days makes it worth it and you feel so much better about yourself

Don't be horrible Chewie! You go for it Nish!

I've just been for my first run for ages - it was quite hard going but I feel grrrreat now. I think exercise definitely helps you to keep mentally healthy and also means that you can eat more without feeling guilty.

Agree that doing it in your lunch hour is the way forward. I go with a couple of girls from my office which helps with motivation.

its amazing how many other runners give me the "evils" when I stop for a tab half way through my running session in the park.... :-)

Mmmm endorphins :) When you run the brain releases these and they are great for relaxation, stress release etc. I used to run 3 times a week and I got addicted to the feeling! Hope to get into it again but keep getting colds from my weekend activities.. January is the month though!

The endorphins are also great for boosting your mood if you're suffering a bit of a comedown.

Being in good shape always keeps your mind healthy as well and give you a more positive outlook on life.

I find when I'm feeling down or depressed, its often because I haven't been doing much exercise.

Make sure you have a mix of cardio and weights. Weights are very important adn don't neglect this, but I always feel better after I've done a cardio workout.

its really good for your physical and emotional health....! I started again a few weeks ago, and especially here when its dark and cold, its so good for your mental health. i get winter depression and these days its been severe. Working out kinda stops the stream of bad thought entering my mind, and keeps me focused. youll find you sleep better, and endorphins will do you good!

Just been out for a five miler...........first since Christmas. Although currently running has descended into a jog........but.......still out doing it tho.......and still enjoying it. :D

Right reward time......out for a few pints tonight. :spank: :p

Running is good.

If i need to de stress and forget about things, i find a good gym session on the weights helps me.

Just been tonight for my first session back this year....i hurt!

I was a member in a gym for about 4 years (since 2001). In this time sometimes I was there:

* sometimes for doing exercises (more or less)
* often to rent dvds and vides, drinking coffee, tanning!

I payed 40 Euros per month.

I´ll quit now, because:

* In the last 3 month I was there about 2 or 3 times, and then 40 Euros is def too expensive
* Running outside (with our dog "Mick") is healthier then doing this in a climated room
* The exercises I have to do for my upper part of my body I also can do at home...

Going to a gym is IMO only useful, if

* you go every second day all the time (No "I don´t want to, lets go couchpotatoing today" - every second week)
* its not too expensive and the gym is a really good one

:D :D :D
