Off to Edinburgh for 3 nights over the next few weeks, Wife a daughters (13 and 11 years) in tow. Going up on the train and got an afternoon and two full days, so recommendations of stuff to do ?

Thanks in advance :)

The castle is good, actually. Went to Edinburgh for the first time since I was a kid last summer and we (was showing an American friend around) went to the castle - not cheap! Other than that, just walked about (the festival was on); we were only there for an afternoon.

If you are wanting to do touristy things then I recommend the National Museaum of Scotland on Chambers Street which is great for kids.

The entrance fee into the Castle isnt really worth it but you can still take a hike up to the esplanade and see the castle and all its glory from there. Also if you go at 1pm you will hear the gun go off.

Royal Yact Britannia at Ocean Terminal is quite good, plus there is plenty shops and eating places in Ocean Terminal itself.

For food & drinks I always tell folk to go to the City Cafe in Blair Street just off the Royal Mile. http://www.thecitycafe.co.uk/

PM me if you want to know anything else.

Thanks peeps, will take a butchers.

I have also been learning the Scottish language to help me out a little. I can order two beers and also ask the way to the tourist information office.

Just need to find our passports now for immigration.

Camera Obscura, next to the castle, is pretty smert - good fun for the kids/man-kids.

A night time ghost walk is also good fun, if a little daft. There are a few different tours, dungeon tours etc.

Have the girls ever read Greyfriars Bobby? Might be fun to get them a copy before going up - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greyfriars_Bobby

Edinburgh folks, is there not a trendy curry house that does things things with a SCOTCH twist like curried haggis and buckfast ice cream? Never been myself.
