Hi all,

Am thinking of driving from the uk in May to Barcelona and getting the ferry over to Ibiza.

Would welcome any comments or advice from anyone who has actually done this before.

Cheers
John.

woody, you can price all that out using a route planner such as the aa or rac provide. you can take toll or non toll routes and work out your petrol costs from the mileage.

interestingly i planned my route from barcelona up to carcassonne like this and found that if you're in a hurry you're better to use a spanish route planner as their journey times are much less than the british ones!

Stephen,

Do you know if you can book the ferries when you arrive in Barcelona ?

Do you think you would be able to get one the same day ?

I have been trying to book them via the Ibiza travel shop but they never call me back !

Thanks

check the websites sil has given you. as a foot passenger it's dead easy to get on the ferry when you turn up. however with a car i'd guess it's better to book in advance as the ferries' bread and butter is commercial (lorries) transport. i've been on ferries in winter with only a few people on but the hold was bursting with wagons.

I drove from London to Ibiza last weekend and for the first time that I've done this trip I kept a note of what I spent.

Eurotunnel to Calais: €130
Fuel (avg 22mpg): €355
Tolls: €115
Return ticket Denia to Ibiza (with residents discount) €188 - bizarrely with Spanish logic a single would have cost me €268!

Total cost: €788 or approx £530.

It's a really easy drive, I arrived in Calais at 2.00 pm on Saturday and I was in Ibiza by 8:00 on Sunday night.

Is that return or one way?

And are the euro* and the ferry tickets the same price regardless of the number of passengers?

So it would appear, for a non resident return trip, the cost would be over £1,000 - I think I will stick to flights.

The costs are all one way. Eurotunnel is the same price regardless of how many passengers, on the ferry to Ibiza though you pay per person, it would have been around €50 for each additional passenger.

It was worth it for me as I was bringing a car down here which saved me thousands of euros, used cars are outrageously expensive in Ibiza. However I wouldn't recommend it for a fortnight's holiday.

It is never going to be cheap, but I would highly recommend it.

For a return trip you are looking at spending about £800 - £1000

ive done it a few times.you can pre book the ferries without paying upfront so it doesnt matter if you miss them.i think the Denia ferry was cheaper. personally i would drive through the pyranees on the way out and motorway on way back. once,i left barcelona at 2pm and was in calais by 2am.

Portsmouth to bilbao option

Obviously you've gone. However, for othere thinking of driving (or maybe thinking or spending a few months) The cheapest and slowest option is.. From £350 and takes about 3 days. Its likely, you'll spending the summer there or longer!

Boat: Portmouth to Bilbao ferry takes about two days. From £209

Drive: Bilbao to Denia - £45 approx (about 7 hours)

Boat: Denia to San Antoni - From £120 (around 5 hours)
