Driving regulations

Hi folks!

Every year I have been too Ibiza I have been tempted to hire a boki or car but as at most places all they ask if your are a certain age and have a full driving liscense is this correct?

Also a few of my mates have full driving licsense but want to hire out motorbikes but have not passed there motorbike test but what does your car driving license cover you to drive and up to what cc or do they not mind over there?

Also what happens if you get caught for speeding?

Sorry for all the questions but they have really been bugging me over the years.

Thanks alot mark ;)

That one's easy. Don't speed! Speed kills

I think the regulations are pretty simple. Drive on the right side of the road. Yield to cars already in the roundabouts. Stop for pedestrians at crosswalks. Obey traffic lights.

If you do all this, no problem. I'm not even sure I've seen a traffic cop and we get a car every year.

I hold a full UK Motorcycle licence and have been riding bikes for 12 years now. I wouldn't dream of hiring a scooter or motorbike over there- 1 or 2 weeks isn't enough time to adapt to riding on the other side, the road surface (they make it out of a different compound of tarmac so's it doesn't melt in the heat, but it does mean that the surface is extra hard and shiny), and all the sand and dust that makes the road surface that little bit trickier. Now, if I lived over there....

Paddy, I was trying to say exactly the same ;)

Re to hiring a car if I'm not wrong you should hold a full licence and have it for 3 years but can't confirm it

carhire

not sure about bikes, but cars .park and pay for you ticket if you park in blue box.do not speed.you must carry a spare pair of glasses if you wear them.have a green jacket in boot .no drinking at all is best way, just have eyes in back of your head, put watch on your right hand, helps with remembering gears.end of the day they know your driving a hire car, great big stickers on car,and no wheel caps. happy driving

They drive on the right side of the road, correct?

If so, no difference for me...I've got a car rented for the entire trip. ;)

Yes they do... the Brits haven't totally taken over the island yet

I'm all booked up too. How much are you paying and for what kind of car?

288 € for 13 days. Ford KA, 3 doors, A/C, airbag, radio, power steering, 4 seats.

Also includes:
unlimited mileage
local taxes (including VAT)
24 h road assistance
full comprehensive insurance
additional driver
roof racks
airport deliveries between 07:00 and 24:00 hours

I got quotes from most of the other places but they were all higher with the exception of amigoautos.com. I have read several horrible reviews on here about them so I decided against them. I rather my first Ibiza experience not be a huge ordeal with a car rental company. FYI: amigoautos.com uses Hiper in case you run across them, they are one in the same.
carjet.com - 331 Euros
motoluis.com tried to beat 288 but they wanted to charge me an additional 7euros/day for excess insurance. This is Hispacar's policy on excess:
"Our quotes for Ibiza include fully comprehensive insurance, there is no excess except for damages to wheels, tyres, underparts of the car, lost keys or mistakes in the fueltype when refuelling. There are no hidden charges." That is from an email I received from then when inquiring.

Let me know if you need any more info...I tend to research A LOT when booking online.

What about US driving liscenses? Do I have to get a different licence to drive in Europe?

I checked with hispacar and they said a US driving license is fine. No problems there...

I booked mine through Hispacar as well. I'm paying 224 euros for 11 days, which works out to exactly the same rate per day as you... only I've got a 5-door Renault Clio with a/c and radio/cassette, etc. :D

Only thing is, my booking said there's a deductible of 150 euros on the insurance.
I'm thinking of adding the 4 eur/day supplement.

I used Hiper last year (via Carjet) and the price was about the same. I put all kinds of little dings in the car and they were more than gracious. (thank god for insurance!). I'm not sure why amigoautos would have a bad rep if they use Hiper as the only downside was it's location (not inside the airport... have to take a shuttle bus).

No, at least, not in Spain, France, UK, etc.. Your US license is valid.

If you want to be on the safe side, head down to the local AAA office and get an international drivers' license. Last time I had one (admittedly, 6-7 years ago), it cost me $10. It only takes a few minutes to do.

The international license itself is not a license to drive, but presented with your US license, it's valid in around 150 countries.

I heard you can pretty much blag a scooter with no license!

Id do it for a laugh :D
I'm sure you wouldn't be laughing if you had an accident- your holiday insurance would be void- you'll be paying for the rest of your life.

I always prebook hire a car from the airport. This years it's Hyper via www.DoYouSpain.com.
A few things to note.
When it rains (and boy does it) the roads become very slippery.
A good map is a must.

After smacking your hand against the door a few times you will soon work out which hand to use.

The only way to get to the best beaches is via car.

Note about hiring a Motorbike. The roads are no worst than they are in the UK ie crap. If you are a competent rider, ride around the coast road in the first few days, to get to know the island, and the best beaches. Also use plenty of sun cream.

Traffic in the US is so much calmer one should concider if it's wise to drive on the hectic and narrow roads of Ibiza...

I've dodged cows running at ME before, everything else is cakework.

Yes! Perfect.

Read some realy good points on here. Paddy says about the road suface being diffrent. Even in a car hit the brakes to hard and you will slide. The roads are being greatly improved and all main roads will be resufaced before june next year. Try this web site for all rules.

http://www.driving-abroad.com/driving-in-spain.htm

loads of usefull tips. The main one is common sence and take your time and remember spanish and Italians are the worst drivers in the world.

Must be somthing in the water

Too True - will back you up totally.... I've held full licence since 17 (now 33) and I've been out in all weathers and conditions. All size bikes from 50cc to current 1200cc and there is no way I would hire / drive a Scooter / death certificate motobike on the isle..... The roads are just plain wrong.

Sorry to rant but if I ever gave just one bit of advice that even just one person ever listened too (because I do talk a lot of sh*t at times) It would be do not hire a bike over there.

Stay safe.
