A few words from me about The Killer Barbies' gig...
For many Spanish rock fans that grew up in the 90s the Galician band was one of their childhood heroes thanks to the first albums
Dressed To Kiss (1995
), Only For Freaks (1996) and
Big Muff (1998). They had it all: cool name, cool album covers, cool lyrics, cool image, cool frontwoman, cool cover versions (Sex Pistols, The Buzzcocks, Tom Petty, Elvis Presley, The Shirelles, The Sangri-las, etc) and, most importantly, cool original songs. By the early 00s they got international distribution through a German label and they toured in Germany (where they opened for Iggy Pop), Japan and the USA (including the legendary club CBGB). The band was even featured as the main characters on two films directed by Jesús Franco. Not bad for a small punk rock band from Vigo. Last thursday was all about returning to those innocent days, when life was easier.
Their singer, promoter of the monthly Fabuloso parties at Cova Santa (the first one of this summer was last saturday), has a long relationship with Ibiza so it was about time her band played here. Founding members Silvia Superstar on vocals and Billy King on drums along with new recruits Adri Maquina on guitar, Brais Quevedo on bass and another guy on keyboards played recent songs like "Peligro" or "De repente" and early gems like "Love killer" or "Comic books". Some covers too, including their new single "¿Si o no?" ("Should I stay or should I go" by The Clash with Spanish lyrics). Surprisingly, none from their second (and probably most popular) album.
A bit short on duration but it was great!
