Does an NIE expire?

Not been resident in Spain for some years now.

Was going through old documents today and found my NIE which was originally stamped in Elche. (X ------- D).

Does this ever need renewing or could (for example) i still use this in Ibiza to open a bank account / provide to an employer etc) ? I seem to remember it lasted forever but someone recenrly told me thats not the case and that it runs out with your passport expiring.

an nie, like a Christmas dog, is for life. it is only a social security/finance number assigned to you for things like having a bank account, buying a car or house and of course having a legal job, and you don't need to be resident to have one. it's like a national insurance number in Britain.
