You can rent a car with an American license. Just need a international permit from AAA

Book the rental car online in advance using a comparison site like Kayak / Holiday Autos / Skyscanner etc. If you do it at the airport, youll pay through the nose.
Pay special attention to insurance (you can buy it from a 3rd party broker rather than from the car hire co if you prefer), and what credit card you need when you pick it up (usually one in the name of the driver, debit/check cards/cash not accepted)

I always rent a car in order to explore the island and to have the freedom that one provides. I got an international permit years back but have yet to been asked for it - idk if some rental companies are more strict than others or what? Facebook has an Ibiza Solo Travelers group that could be of some help in connecting with others. It's especially easy when you have a car and post a flexible itinerary that includes out of the way places like Es Vedra, or beaches such as Es Cavallet or Sa Trixna and such. Post where on the island you're staying so that others in your vicinity can reach out to you for rides for just a little something to chip in for gas.
