Do I need a car while travelling in Ibiza?

I'm going to be in Ibiza for 5 days. Do I need to rent a car to get around or is more logical to take a taxi/cab? If anything, do I need a car for all 5 days of the trip? Any recommendations of car rental company (cheapest too)? Thanks

Hola Jammasta,

What are your plans for those five days and where are you staying?
If you plan exploring the beaches and the island or you are located out of the track you would probably need a car.
If you plan clubbing and you stay in Sant Antoni, Platja d'en Bossa or Ibiza you'll be fine with public transport.

In the main site there's info about car rental companies

Thanks Silvia for the quick response.

I plan to do some sightseeing in the daytime and do some bar/club hopping in the evening. I'm staying at San Antonio Abad (I'm not even sure where this is since the map does show this location). I'm assuming it's probably the west side of Ibiza and will probably need a car to get around.

san antonio abad is just referred to as san antonio and san antonio bay, theres a map on this site which will probably be helpfull to you. 8)

Jammsta,

I'm not very good with public transport in the island, probably someone else can help. But renting a car for a couple of days and exploring the island is, IMO, a must do

GET A BUS!

:D HI GUYS,well i spent last summer there, and my boss who was spanish thought the roads were only made for him!.....picture this..early one friday morn...mega hangover.....3 hours sleep.....roundabout just ouside ibiza town....8.30 in the morn! 80 mph coming up to roundabout.....pissing rain...crash.bang.wallop!the bllody car in front stalled at crucial moment!...jeeez what a nightmare.hiring a car in ibiza is relativley straight forward....but the driving standards embraced by the spainards leave a lot to be desired.san-antonio to ibaza town road is a very dangerous drag!.highly unpredicatble drivers/tourists.take a tip.....catch the bus anywhere....there cheap.air-conditoned and quite regular.airport to ibiza town=1.50 euros.....ibiza town to san-antonio.....i think was 2 euros!....much cheaper.much safer. cheers scots ps dont even think o hiring a moped/scooter....pps you can catch buses to all parts of the island from the bus-stops along from the ferry terminal on san-antonios sea front.

Thanks Maurice,
Are there no speed limits in Ibiza? I'm not worry about the drivers in Ibiza, I'm more worry about not being able to get around after a certain time. It's kind of inconvenient to go sightseeing by bus, so maybe it's wise to maybe at least rent a car for at least 2 to 3 days (i'm there 5 days)?

Yes, of course there's speed limits, depending on the type of road it would be 50, 80 or probably 120.
Maurice, I don't think spaniards on the road are dangerous, probably most cars you saw were drove by tourists ;)

mmmmmmm

:D lol..i never saw too many cars in ibiza that didnt have scratches/dints/marks on them silva!......footnote to my above story.....after we crashed into this birds car.....her boyfriend whizzed over from the other side of the round-about in his volvo! 8O apparantley he saw the crash...lol.anyways when i stepped outta the car......he soon zipped his tounge!. ;) tourists are bad drivers anywhere silva...but seriously silva.....compared to uk driving standards.....you good people from ibiza havent got a look in!.our roads over here in uk are maintained for starters.................... cheers maurice ps and we have motorways/dual carriageways which is something that is sadly lacking between ibiza town and san-an.

The roads on Ibiza are more than adequate and the native drivers no worse than anywhere else. It may be a small island but I reckon I have done about 20,000kms over the years without hitting anyone or anyone hitting me ( apart from that blasted tree which grew when I wasn't looking 8O ).
A car is a must for exploring the beaches and getting up in the hills.
No dual carriageway/motorway is necessary on the island as you are at most about 45 minutes from anywhere else on current roads so that isn't long out of a holiday.

dual carriageway!

:D well it does need improving the san an ibiza road.....if yer nipping along at 70.....and as is the case in ibiza.....if a car pops oot from a T junction your in deep shit!.be much better if they had slip roads on the ibiza san an road........plus they need a 30mph speed limit on the road near amnesia!.....too many kids getting knocked down there.infact on my last day in ibiza, about 6 km from ibiza town at 7.30 in the morn we saw a poor chap who had been knocked down by a car lying sprawled in the middle of the rd,ovbiously dead....the gaurdia civil didnt even cover his body up.that was my lasting impression of ibiza roads........ cheers maurice

Nothing wrong with the speed limit on the road near amnesia - it's the alcohol and drug fuelled prats stumbling out into the road that is the problem at least they probably don't feel any pain - just their families that suffer but what the hell, they died having a good time......................

Manual / Automatic

Can someone tell me why the manual transmission cars cost so much more than the automatic cars here? I don't know how to drive a manual transmission, so it looks like I'm going to get screwed??????

So Maurice, you might be right, getting around by Bus and taxi might be the safer and CHEAPER option. Well, I don't know Ibiza, but if I'm not wrong, it's only 14 miles long, so how far can I possibly need to go? If I'm gonna be in IbizaTown, I'll probably be there most of the day.

I'm gonna be staying at Urbanizacion Ses Fontanellas, Ctra Port Des Torrent, San Antonio Abad ... does anyone know this area???? How far am I from all the clubs or bars?
