'Digitising' Vinyl

alrite boss, thanks for that.

in english please?? :?

Soundcard = this will act as the interface between your decks / amp and your computer.

The sound card plugs into the laptop (via a USB port) and the output from the decks or amp (i.e the white and red stereo leads) plug into the soundcard.

Something like this would be adequate if your just planning to use it for recording vinyl to your computer rather than for music production.

right i follow now. thanks

so what morbyd said earlier about plugging into the computer's line-in won't work? is it possible my computer has an internal thingymajig that means i don't need a sound card?

that link doesn't work.

That's all assuming he's using a laptop.

If it's a desktop computer, it's almost certainly already got a sound card with a stereo input.

Even most newer laptops will have a stereo mic input which works just fine.

Nope the line in wont work as the signal from the record deck needs to be boosted to Line In levels. Thats what the mixer in a dj's set up or the vinyl in on your stereo does.

Have you got a line out or record out on your stereo?

i think so yeah, i used to use my stereo as my amp as it had different functions you could use (such as for a minidisc connection).

so i'd connect deck to mixer and then mixer to stereo.

does that mean i need to use my stereo/mixer in between the computer then?? (god i feel like barbie in one of her technology nightmares!:?:lol:)

You should never use a Mic in as a line in mate as it can distort. Mic is only set up for a small voltage input so it usually has a amp connected to it to boost it to line in levels, Line in is a lot higher voltage.

Yes mate as otherwise the signal your recording will be very quiet. You can boost it in a recording program but its more hassle than its worth as it will just boost any flaws in the vinyl.

You can go straight from mixer output if you use the external soundcard (which are dirt cheap for a basic one) and can monitor levels from either the mixer or the soundcard headphone out.

No reason why you can't use one with a desktop and the recording quality should be better than using the one built into the machine (which tend to be a bit pooh - sound and graphics cards tend to be one of the things desktop manufacturers save money on when building the machine)

(Think the link should work this time)

right so in summary, have a bash with my mixer and then maybe use a soundcard if i'm not getting desired sound. simple!

Hmm... must have used the line-in then as I didn't have that problem... but I did it straight from a tape player without mixer, etc... suppose I could have used the headphone jack though.

I didn't realise Serato could be used for this. That's handy as I'm about to buy it and have thousands of records to get on to HD.

Is it easier to use than the likes of Sound Forge?
