The fiestas held in Ibiza Town to celebrate the conquest of the island by Catalonian soldiers in the middle ages & the removal of the Arab rulers from the island have started & last until the 8th August. Monday saw a superb comedy presentation by the Mallorcan comic, Jaume Rosello, held in the Reina Sofia park in the town. This extremely witty man had the large local audience in stitches as he went through his routine of stand up comedy.
Tuesday saw the inauguration of a fantastic historical photographic exhibition featuring some unique views of Ibiza which has been set up the entrance to the Town Hall in Ibiza Old Town.
The children are in for a treat today, Wednesday 4th as activities & theatre & art work shops are being organised for them in the Reina Sofia park. These events are open to all kids on the island & there is a special theatre show for them at 19.30h so get there early.
Thursday sees the big celebrations in honour of Santa Maria. There will be the usual civic & religious ceremonies as well as folklore acts & a concert by famous Spanish pop singer Manu Tenorio. All of which will be followed y a firework display which is rumoured to have cost a fortune & should be realty spectacular! *
More social & civic events are planned for the Friday, Saturday & Sunday & will include brass band concerts, a marathon radio show, a huge street parade through the centre of Ibiza Town, an enactment of the soldiers winning back the island for the Catalonian crown & yet another spectacular fire work display.
Apart from the social & cultural events, there are also lots of sporting activities taking place as part of these fiestas. Next weekend there will be a fishing competition, a running race, a cycling race, a beach tennis competition & a table tennis tournament.
With such an extensive program taking place, these fiestas really do have something for everyone & it is worth going over to Ibiza town on any evening this week to see & join in with what is going on.
