Common Ground is the new club night from two of Liverpool’s leading crews. Finding the musical Common Ground between master eclecticians Sick Trumpet and Hip Hop originals No Fakin isn’t hard; both are built on a foundation of solid soul. Each night wants to go places it hasn’t been before, to go further into hip hop, delve deeper into house, get closer to jazz, go back to the funk. It’s all about the fusion, the balance, the Common Ground.

When the No Fakin boys invited Sick Trumpet to be a part of the Platinum Pied Pipers gig in the Magnet, and forgive us for blowing our own very sick trumpet, we put on some of the finest music to grace Liverpool’s clubs in 2005. We knew we had something. After hooking up a couple more times we have decided to make this meeting of minds a regular thing during 2006.

No Fakin has been providing Liverpool with its very own block party for years, and has brought everyone from Hip Hop icon Grandmaster Flash, to true school innovator Edan to town. Sick Trumpet sprung up in 2004, threw forgotten dancefloor classics and 21st Century soul into the melting pot and served up treats like Rainer Truby and Kelvin Andrews to a loyal crowd of older, drunker, disco queens and kings. No Fakin’s take on hip hop is deeply rooted in the old school, however far away those roots in late ‘70s and early ‘80s NYC are. While Sick Trumpet’s ethos is close to the original disco sound of that same era, before disco became a genre in itself, when it described the broad selection of music that could be heard on the dancefloor. Two very different club nights, whose inspiration comes from the same time and place.

The first performance of all of the four elements of Hip Hop in the public eye was Graffiti Rock at New York's Common Ground, way back in 1981. This fusion of DJing, MCing, breaking and graffiti may have been a bit closer to the cutting edge, but our Common Ground will play its part showcasing all that’s good in Liverpool’s strong underground music scene and bringing fresh sounds to the city. I guess we’ve got our own Fab 5 Freddy with Phat Phil Cooper!

With guests as varied as Phil Asher, Fingathing and Blackbeard coming up in the next few months, and a brilliant roster of resident DJs expect the musical quality and integrity to be sky high. With DJ Conrad, Kwinzola, Phil Charnock, Ste Hodge and the ubiquitous Phil Cooper in control every month you’ll be in safe hands. We’ll be taking the show to Liverpool’s most passionate and exciting venue, The Magnet. With a Funktion One soundsystem in the main room, and the legendary Fishtank feeling as good as ever, The Magnet has been re-invigorated by its new 24hour licence. It’s the right place.

We all share musical Common Ground. Hope you can come and share the good times with us, starting on Friday January 27th 2006 in the Magnet.

Peace.

Common Ground crew.
