Who was there? I have just heard that Amnesia was open till 12. And the after was so amazing. I am waiting for some reviews because i could not be there
I arrived at the doors of Amnesia at around 3am, and the guest list queue was already huge.
But not as big as the ticket queue - four deep, it stretched all the way down the length of the club.
After about half an hour I made it to the front only to discover the my photo permission had been rescinded -
- which proved to be the source of a little aggravation later on.
Most people on the list were being charged 20€ but I got in for free, I think by way of an apology from the door chick re: camera pass.
The notices about the afterclub
in the club were pasted everywhere, which seemed to most to be a sensible (if slightly devious) method of conforming to existing licensing restrictions.
Also widely publicised (on the big screens) was an instruction for island residents to register at the door whereupon they would be signed up to a scheme to enable them to enter the club in the future for free or reduced entry.
It was packed on the terrace and I didn't even try to go into the main room. I met a girl I know from another website (Sarah) and chatted to her and her boyfriend and their friends while we ambled round the club trying to find a good spot. Eventually we ended up at the Coco Loco bar staffed by the famous and friendly Tirry. Who should be there but Stu Hirst, sucking back the 5€ creamy spunk-tails like any self-respecting Scotsman would when offered discount liquor.
I couldn't really see who was on but the techno was mellow and housey and the place had a pleasant and friendly vibe despite the large volume of people.
I figured it was best not to take photos as I didn't want to get spotted and booted by the security. I wish I'd been so sensible later on.
Ricardo Villalobos then got onto the decks and by this point I'd found all the rest of my friends and my flatmate so we got down to the serious business of getting down.
I have no idea how Rick makes everybody go so wild while playing a series of clicks and bumps. Minimal is the perfect name. There's barely anything there, but it feels so good.
I think there's something really nice about dancing to unusual noises and syncopation, knowing that the beat will come back in at some point. The arrival of the four four kick drum feels like a pay off for investing emotional energy into the earlier alternative sounds. It's mechanical but groovy at the same time. Sorry to sound like a hippy, but in the end it's all about love and togetherness and moving as one.
As warned the music stopped at six we filed out and received a flyer to enable us to re-enter. There was a brief interlude at Manumission before we were back again for Cocoon closing part II. There was a bit of a Groundhog Day vibe at first but the sun had come up so jackets were unzipped and we assembled in front of the decks where the blonde bombshell Richie Hawtin was about to come on.
Uh oh. The 8.45 from Ontario hit the 9.02 from Chile resulting in a metallic screeching. It was the very definition of trainwreck, but Hawtin was rescued by the talented team in the booth and pulled himself together enough to have another attempt later on, which went much better.
I discovered the bars took cards so decided to start buying rounds, which seemed like a good idea at the time. I suddenly had lots of friends and felt agreeably pissed. It was around this time that I forgot my earlier decision to refrain from photography and took a few snaps of my mates. Big mistake. I won't go into details as I hope to resolve the issue in the future, but it took several minutes of frantic negotiation by my persistent and insistent flatmate to get me back into the club.
They have got a point tho. Like most venues, Amnesia want to know exactly who is in the club taking photos and they want to be able to monitor the resulting coverage. It was my fault for not obeying the rules.
I attempted to make amends by once again buying a cheesy photo from the official outlet which I will post shortly.
With only 10€ remaining I decided to vacate the premises and Carry On at Space.
Reports are forthcoming.
