Scottish teenager is killed in Ibiza

LAURA ROBERTS

A SCOTTISH teenager was knocked down and killed early yesterday on a notorious stretch of road on the holiday island of Ibiza.
Ryan Jonathan Toms, from Glasgow, was hit by a lorry as he walked back to the lively resort of San Antonio at around 2:30 am.

The Spanish driver of the lorry was given a breath test, according to police reports, but it proved to be negative.
The 18-year-old teenager was on holiday with a group of friends.
The tragedy is just one of a dozen similar accidents over the past decade on the same stretch of road, involving young people from Britain and the rest of Europe.
The victims were all walking back to their hotels in San Antonio having enjoyed a night in one of the out-of-town discos.
A spokesman from the Foreign Office confirmed last night that Ryan had been identified and that the family had been informed.
He said: "We are offering what support we can. All we can confirm is that he is from the Glasgow area and may have been born in Aberdeen."
The Foreign Office confirmed that the driver of the lorry had not been arrested and that the inquiry was in the hands of local police

:(

Mind how you go guys.

My flatmate saw the bloody aftermath. Apparently it was between Underground and Amnesia.

And another British holidaymaker is dead after falling from her San An hotel balcony.

BRIT'S IBIZA DEATH FALL
By Fiona James

A BRITISH holidaymaker has plunged 40ft to her death from a hotel window in Ibiza, it was revealed yesterday. Hospital technician Lisa Bundy, 21, had leaned out of the third-floor window to have a cigarette while her room-mates slept.
Her bed was under the window and it is believed that she overbalanced, landing in the hotel basement. She suffered horrific head injuries and died soon after the fall. Lisa and friends Kim Devlin and Debbie Fielding, all from Poole, Dorset, had been enjoying a 10-day holiday in the party resort of St Antonio.
On the night of Lisa's death the trio had been for a meal out and drank two bottles of wine before returning to the three-star Marvell Complex hotel.
Last night her father Shaun demanded urgent action to avoid a repeat of his daughter's accident.
He said: "These hotels should install window safety bars. This could easily have happened to a child. I don't want any parent to go through what we are going through." Lisa's funeral is at St Paul's Church in Canford Heath on Wednesday.
Her father added: "Lisa, my only child, was just a joy to be around. She made everybody happy and has been taken away too early.

"She was very popular. I don't think the church for her funeral will be big enough."

Yes, everybody, do mind how you go...walking along unlit roads that are currently a roadwork navegational nightmare is not a great idea, no matter what way you look at it.
As for falling off balconies, I'm told the legal height of the balconies in the majority of hotels is 1m..and that this is a fairly recent thing..they used to be any old size.
BE CAREFUL EVERYBODY...dont throw caution to the wind just cos you're on your hols..we really dont want you to go home in a box..

when i drive around 2 to 3 am between san an and eivissa there is always people walking down the road. i am a resident on the island and people have suggested to do a tunnel under the road for people to walk from a side of the road to another but the goverment dont listen to people. they should do something or some one will get killed again!
please protest for a tunnel under this bloody road.

the problem is, people are protesting AGAINST new roads on ibiza.

including burning excavators etc

the campaign against the roads is getting some high profile support so it wont be easy.

tony blair is for them.

spoiling the natural beauty or a necessity for safety?

Guys, we were the 2nd car to arrive after this accident and when we got there all we saw was a body lying in the middle of the road. I was driving and got out of the car to see if I could help. I couldnt make out if it was a guy or a girl but what I saw was truly awful. It was clear that he was hit in the middle of the road and not on the roadside. One thing I did notice was that the person wasnt wearing any shoes or socks so you would have to wonder about the circumstances of the accident. Maybe the guy was sleep walking or possibly under the influence. The driver of the lorry was naturally completely distressed.
By chance an ambulance happened to be two cars behind us but there was nothing they could do for the person.

It really shook me up seeing this and for the last two days of the holiday I made sure I did not go over the speed limit.
But seeing things like this should make everyone travelling to be Ibiza realise that it is so important that you do not walk on that road at night and also try and keep an eye on your friends who are a little bit worse for wear and make sure they dont wander out onto the road.

very sad reading. its easy to be blazé about these things on holiday with drink and whatnot. that road is a bit scary driving down at night let alone walking. one of my pals almost walked out in front of a truck in broad daylight after pacha.

That's sad, people be careful! Saying that, I have walked next to the SanAn-Eivissa road couple times during night, changing club from Amnesia to Privilege and it wasn't the most convinient trip

i would even consider walking on those roads, as we were travelling back from el divino on saturday night we talked about that road and couldn't understand walking when taxis are not that expensive, i know i'd rather spend 20 euros on a taxi than risk my life

I was there too and saw Ryan. Site was just hundred meters from Amnesia. The body was lying in the middle of he road. Maybe he was crossing the road? And why he was without socks?

It is possible he had no socks on and the impact of the crash knocked his shoes off.
Im not sure exactly what road works they are doing on that road but the least they need to do is put more lighting on the road. The stretch between San Rafel and Can Tomas is pitch black and from what I have heard lots of tourists walk that part of the road back to San Antonio.

Another balcony plunge:

IBIZA DEATH PLUNGE

Man, 21, falls from 4th floor of apartment block
By Claire O'Boyle

A NORTHERN Ireland man on holiday with friends has plunged to his death from an apartment block in Ibiza.
Michael Clifford Ford, 21, from Belfast, died after falling from the fourth floor of the building he was staying in at the San Antonio resort on the west of the popular island.
A local news report claimed: "It appears that the lad in question was trying to jump from one balcony to another when he apparently lost his balance."

It's thought Michael then fell 40ft to the ground below.

Members of his family travelled to the holiday island yesterday after hearing word of the accident.

Michael, whose full name is Michael Clifford Ford, was staying at one of the scores of budget holiday apartments in the centre of San Antonio.

Local police were investigating reports that he lost his footing as he jumped from the balcony at around 7pm on Thursday.

The paramilitary Civil Guard, who have taken control of the inquiry, are trying to establish if Michael had been drinking in San Antonio's usually packed bars before his accident.

Ibiza remains a mecca for fun-seeking youngsters who are drawn to the throng of nightclubs and bars.

Michael's death comes after a number of Irish tourists have been killed or seriously injured in falls from apartments.

In 2002, Spanish police launched an investigation into the death of an Irish man in Gran Canaria just hours after a street row. John Micheal Daly was found dead after falling from a balcony at the Playa Del Ingles resort.

It is believed the 23-year-old from Cork had an argument with security guards outside the Aguila Roja shopping centre before he fell 50ft to his death.

At the time the Irish consulate said a high number of incidents are not reported to police.

In August 2001 Belfastborn Karen Pelan survived a fall from her sixth-floor apartment in the same resort.

The 29-year-old suffered two broken arms, broken ribs and a burst liver. She had life-saving surgery in Playa Del Ingles.

And in 2002 Belfast musician Colin Magill, 20, died after falling from a balcony in America where he was working.

Officials in Ibiza said Michael's body would be flown back home as soon as possible.

Tragic & Sad - But why jump between balconies? - Sober or "Drunk" Where is the common sense?

The only time I've seen someone go between balconies that high up is when they were "borrowing" money - Security wasn't too happy....

The boy was meant to have had sunstroke and was delirious from it when he died.

Very sad indeed.

You hear this argument a lot: “It’s a choice between pristine nature and safety.”
I really think this is a false dichotomy. You certainly can have both.

If you don’t want to widen the road, that’s fine, but at least install proper sidewalk, larger shoulders, proper lighting, traffic calming devises (i.e. stop lights for pedestrians, speed humps, stop signs), traffic officers when the clubs are letting out and more pedestrian bridges or tunnels.

Also, have the clubs pay to double or triple the number of buses from the clubs to Ibiza town and San. An. No one is going to try and make that walk if there is a bus right there.

The number of pedestrians that die on Ibiza roads is unacceptable, and unfortunately is largely preventable with a little money, planning, and well thought out traffic engineering.

wise words tiger.

actually it's only a small percentage of deaths on that road which are pedestrians. the vast majority of deaths are caused by excess speed, lack of seatbelts, driver error or distraction, and of course falling asleep or intoxication. something which all the motorways in all the world aren't going to solve.
the so called disco road has few bends or blind spots, it's just pure carelessness and bad driving which causes the accidents - even a guardia civil officer killed himself last year because of this. the powers that be have seized upon the furor in the british press as a poor excuse to claim road safety is the reason for the motorway.....my personal opinion is that there's an ulterior motive for drawing down a massive european loan.
