Hi all,

Next Monday 19th May sees the start of a week of climate change themed activities in Ibiza. There is the International Conference on World Heritage, Tourism and Climate Change, with various round tables, conferences and a variety of leisure and cultural activities throughout the city.

See more info at:

Will post the program shortly.

Cheers, Max

And no doubt all the delegates will be flying here..... wouldn't it be more eco friendly to discuss climate change via video conferencing?

Of course it would be more eco-friendly to videoconference, but the aim of the conference is to raise awareness about Ibiza and the global environment. It's not just a jolly. A large number of the people involved are from Ibiza's environmental organisations and council. At least the government is trying to protect Ibiza now. Previous regimes seem to have been hell-bent on covering the island with tarmac and concrete.

Seriously, the island's economy is based on tourism. It might be best for the environment if everybody just stayed at home and watched the island on web cams, but it's hardly practical. We've got to find the best compromise and that means people have to talk to each other. And that works best face to face.

Well said, Nick.

In fact there were plenty of conference delegates who arrived on foot or by bicycle.
The whole flying issue is obviously a hotly-debated subject, but there's a difference to flying short-haul within Europe for an important conference looking at solutions to the problem, and long-haul flights to exotic destinations purely for holidaying.

Of course with the ferry companies being so costly, the problem is not helped. This subject has been raised several times during the conference. Let's see what pans out...

Cheers, Max
