Child hunting

I saw that on the 'net last week.

Don't know about the hunting part (we have some hunters in my family, but I was never interested)...

...but that is one ginormous pig!

What do you guys think?

I was brought up in a No Gun family and culture, but I never had an opinion about firearms or hunting as I had never held a firearm or hunted. Now I am very strongly pro-firearms and pro-hunting. I have hunted only twice, one time being wild boar.

Making the son a man does not mean that they planned from the get go to look for a monster boar. If anyone has hunted before, one would attest to the fact that hunting wild boar is dangerous. Unlike deer, there is a high likelihood that a boar will charge the hunter.

A decent size boar in California is about 180lbs (~80kg), and it is stupid (not to mention deadly) to go boar hunting solo. Just imagine an injured 80kg boar charging at a person at 30kph. It's not pretty. There is an age when one is introduced to firearms, hunting rabbits, deer, etc.

That being said there are a few points that I personally have issues with that I will bring up. Normally, when boar hunting, the rifle is the primary weapon, and a high powered hangun like the 44Magnum or the .50 (as used by Jamison) is used to finish the job at close range.

Personally, after seeing a hogzilla, if I were the dad, I would have told my son that "manhood can come a little later", and I would have used the rifles, and maybe let the son provide the coup de grace.

Jamison has been hunting since he was 5, and he was with his dad and 2 guides. Hence, I would say that he was in good hands, but considering the size of the boar, I would have done it the way I mentioned in the preceding para.

That being said, at least from the picture, it appears that his father has brought him up with some good firearms discipline. If you look at the picture closely Jamison has his finger off the trigger. One of the 4 Golden Rules of Firearms Safety is To keep the finger off the trigger until the sights are on target and you are ready to fire.

I am personally glad that his parents introduced him to firearms at a young age. If I ever have kids, I would do the same if they are interested.

Speaking of hunting, anyone see Gordon Ramseys show last night? I was so suprised he could not bring himself to kill the deer.
I think it's a bit hypercritical he buys his children pet pigs, then has them slaughtered to 'teach' them.

Back on topic, why do Americans get shocked when Children end up doing high school masacres, when the gun coulture is rife out there.

Sorry Laguna but pro gun, pro hunting. I hope you actually eat what you kill because killing to eat i can understand but killing for sport just to see what the biggest animal you can get and mounting it i find despicable. It does not make you a man you have a gun for gods sake the thing doesnt stand much of a chance against it.Why does America have such an ugly obsession with killing. If its not animals its innocent people.
Just remember you sing the praises of guns so much would you still be singing if someone dear to you was shot dead for attending school.

Has he had horse on his menu yet? :spank: They had demonstrators outside his restaurant, dumping manure!

I don't think he has yet. It just made me laugh how much he likes to play the hard man, but when it came to shooting that deer he bricked it.

LB, it makes me sick the way you discuss this issue and are so blasé as if you were talking about a recipe or something.

you are deluded, hopefully you won't learn the hard way.

hear hear grego.

Cue lots of stats about how there are lots of guns in canada and switzerland but no massacres. Its the social conditions of the US y'see that are to blame. Guns dont kill people, people do.

So social issues + guns + people = massacres.

There is still only one part of the equation that if removed would result in no gun led massacres. Thats the guns.

Why such a problem with horse as opposed to other animals? I ask this with an open mind, but I can not see the difference. If nature did not mean us to eat meat, then why does it taste so good with bernaise sauce?!:)

I say fair play to him for going ahead and putting it in the programme even though he bottled out, as someone who is very fond of meat I think it is important we aren't under any illusions about where it comes from and Ramsey is certainly performing that service. Can't make up my mind whether not pulling the trigger was due to reluctance to shoot the thing or concern that he wouldn't manage a clean kill.

America's "ugly obsession" with killing animals is no more than anywhere else in the world.

It's the people killing part that's a problem :spank:

(oh, and I like horse meat :D)

Neigh, I haven't got a problem with horsemeat. The horse would have lived a much better life than say a cow or a sheep...
It is the fact he is doing it to to cause controversy, that is all :)

yep fair play :) - authors of their own 'shock' tactics. 'Horse meat..arent they crazzeee!'
