Chernobil - Nunca Mais - Never again

horrendous.:(

always remember watching a programme about it that said Kiev escaped the brunt of the radiation as the wind was blowing the other way in the days around the accident. Not sure if its an urban legend but would have been an even greater catostrophe if true.8O

Mostly true. Thanks to the wind, Belarus bore the brunt of the fall-out.

20% of Belarus was declared uninhabitable. However, that psycho Pres. Lukashenko is sending people back over the past couple of years "to boost agriculture".

Stay away from Belarusian veggies!

 horrible, i wish i hadn't read that - and still our governments are pushing nuclear because 'it's clean'

Chernobyl is something that is going to be remembered for a long time I hope and lessons learnt by governments all over the world. Very sad chain of events :(

Especially yours! (sorry)

And ours?

Well there are over 40 nuclear reactors in the UK and our government wants to build more.
And the risk is even greater now with the constant threat of international terrorism.

Judging by the moaning that goes on around here, I'd say your gov't isn't doing a whole lot better!

(but ya... US gov't sucks right now... Russia's too)

I have to say that I thought about Katrina and New Orleans when I read Morbyd's message, but not because Morbyd is american, just cos it's the best recent example of a govt failling to citizens.
But... there would be hundred examples here in Spain, smaller tragedies so smaller impacts, and I guess there would be examples in most of the countries too

Prestige and the Doñana disaster were not massive tragedies in terms of human death but defo in terms of economic and environmental:?

Exactly. Actually the "nunca mais" of the title of this thread comes from the Prestige Campaign and shamefull consequences.:?

I dare say there's only a few non 3rd world countries that can match the Russian Govt for sheer catastrophic failing of citizens!

I see this is going to be "Chelsea aren't divers" all over again

Ours may be absolute w4nkers of people, but to even compare the two is nothing short of ludicrous.

Nuclear reactors are the future, whether you like it or not. Random experiments and futile attempted cover-ups aside (!), they're not that dangerous, and are guarded probably a lot better than you or I imagine.

i agree that nuclear power is the future, but not that it should be.

it's expensive, potentially highly dangerous and life threatening on a massive scale and as far as i know we still have no way of getting rid of the waste (which there is lots).

it's just a matter of time before Chernobyl 2.

The Russian government and Soviet governments are different animals, even if part of the same genus.

The Russian government isn't great but it certainly can't match the Soviet government, especially as related to Chernobyl.

And don't fool yourself into thinking Western governments are so lilly white.
