Cheap but nice hotels in NYC?

I know a lot of you get about a bit... my cousin is planning a wee jaunt to the states this summer and I said id ask around to see if anyone knew of any basic but clean and fairly central accomodation in the big apple?

How much should she and her bloke be looking to spend per night for a room?

They are also visitng Las Vegas, LA and SF so if you know of any similar accomodation in these places, please do share!

I have stayed here it was cheap but clean and its about 5 blocks from the Empire State building.

If he books now he should find great deals in expedia, hotels.com or similars, just check tripadivsor for users reviews.
I stayed at the Metropolitan for just 90€/night booking with 6 months in advance
