Whats the deal with cashpoints in ibiza......

Are there many?

Are there silly exchange rates?

What cards can u not use abroad?

Reason being, i do not want to just change over all the money i have saved, say i get robbed, leaves me in quite a predicament! prefer to leave money in my account!

it all depends on your bank account and the atm you use.

UK banks tend to charge a fee or a %age for using their card abroad, usually capped at around £4.50

Spanish banks may charge you a couple of euros.

Most of the ATMs in Ibiza won't charge you for withdrawals. I'd put the number that do charge at about 30%, and the fee is usually 2 euros.

Bank machines are plentiful so there's no worries. If you are using Visa or MasterCard/EuroCard, the exchange rate is dictated by the payment systems. The rates are usually just fine (though some banks add on 0.5% for currency exchange... check with your bank to make sure.)

Don't take cash. Even if you end up spending around 2 euros per hundred that you withdraw, you're much better off than if you took cash.

Also, keep in mind that you can pay for some things with your card - restaurants, items in stores, even at clubs if you want. That way, you can try to minimize cash usage and lower the amount you withdraw.

Finally, take at least 2 cards if you have them. Keep one in a good hiding place in your hotel just in case you lose your wallet.

.

do you need to produce ID/passport when using a credit card at restaurants?

i've only ever tried to pay for things twice with a CC in ibiza and both times I was asked for my passport.

Remember that most shops and restaurants will ask you to show them a id card with your picture on it

Most places will accept a UK picture driving licence instead of a passport. The reason why places ask for a passport is that legally you should always have your passport with you in Spain. ID cards are compulsory for nationals and so foreigners are expected to carry something similar. That said, I've never actually heard of a tourist being busted for not carrying a passport.

Back to the original question. If the Spanish cashpoint has a charge for withdrawals it has to inform you of the exact amount. Many even offer the alternative of billing euros or sterling. I've never worked out which is the better deal though.
