Career Change Advice Needed

Right Ive had enough of trying/hoping to blag my way into the design industry. Its clear to me that gaining a degree in this subject is going to be a big step in the right direction.8)

I'm currently working freelance for the PGA in the USA but I have to do a sh$t van driving job to pay my rent and it funking sucks big time.
No challenge, anyone can do it and I have to tolerate wannabee wiesels that talk to you like crap:evil: ....... and the wages are pants:x . Is it possible to work this poo job and study for a degree so I can move on. The work I do for the PGA is quite promising in terms of who it is and that can add to the frustration at times 'coz people constantly bombard me with "why the funk are you driving for a living"

Most jobs I see online require a top qual of some sort.

I know you guys will come through with some sound words as always;)

What steps are next then:?: Keep on doing what im doing or get that degree.

Design is one of those areas where you do tend to need a relevant qualification, unless you're very lucky (and then it's more of a case of who you know).

But a degree is going to take up the next 3 years of your life, would you be prepared to carry on with the PGA for the next 3 years :?

Could you look to do something that you'd enjoy more work-wise while doing your degree??

I'm assuming that even tho you haven't got relevant design qualification you will have a portfolio of work?? If so, have you bombarded design agencies etc with examples of your work, a lot of them take on freelance creatives and that can give you a foot in the door.

Easy Babs, the jobs I have landed I got through meeting the right person at the right time and showing them my portfolio. The PGA work is in its infancy at the moment and although the wages they pay are great, its not regular enough at the moment to quit my poo job.

I need to get my teeth into something that is challenging. I'd happily work my way up from a Junior designer position for the same salary as my day time job. The reason I feel doing a degree will help is that most of the jobs I see online require one and secondly it will open up my mind.

I have tried some agencies online, but have had no joy so far. There is a way forward I know. Just gotta select the right one.

I would keep bombarding design agencies with examples of your work and asking about freelancing opportunities, all it takes is to be in the right place at the right time and a bit of luck - an agency wins a pitch, they've got people off sick/on holidays, need somebody in at short notice and that's the day after your CV/work dropped on their desk ;)

A degree course will start in September won't it, you've got nothing to lose by applying for degree course cos I agree a degree will open more doors for you and in the meantime if some more regular design work comes up you're not committed to starting it but it's there as a fall-back so you can review the situation in say 6 months time.

Good luck :D

Maybe I've missed something, but maybe if you worked on your short game a little you'd be better off?

What are you like on the greens?

As the old proverb goes, the dough is in the putting, and IMO doing the hours working on that would help you get you more money on the tour.

I was gonna try my hand at swinging but I'm not into irons or roughs. 8)

Haha, I like your style ;)

Have you ever thought of stand up?

We could be a double act. (Sorry B)

You line 'em up...
