Car Hire, A Story

Never had issues with car hire in Ibiza or any other country, probably a dozen times now.

I guess you get what you pay for, and I do ignore the lowest prices offered on the net.

Saying that last year I booked by easycar, who are close to that bracket.

Arrived at the airport, and the assistant at the pick up desk (AVIS) pointed out that pick up was supposed to be at Ibiza Town.

What a twat Mark, how the hell did you cock that up!

Not to worry, the assistant without having to grovel sorted me a car out in minutes and before you could say 'bobs your uncle' there I was driving away from Ibiza airport with my car for the week.

After posting a "pay for full tank of fuel" type thread on here at the beginning of the year I now rest my case. You get what you pay for with no hidden charges.

I cancelled my cheaper booking and went with the company mentioned. What a hassle free experience it turned out to be. Friendly chap at parking spot G32 (or similar) had us away within 30 mins of touchdown. I even rang them about filling up at a service station near the airport prior to return, the lady in the office said "Its difficult to access, just fill up in San Antonio, it will be fine."

Will definitely use these again.

Autos Mari are a good company but they've always worked out at least 30-50% more expensive than pre-paying for car hire through in-terminal global firms like Avis, Hertz, Atesa etc. where the car is there waiting in the car park opposite the airport terminal when you fly in and your paperwork is done in the baggage reclaim hall.

Hiper at a push out of season were also fine for out-of-hours arrival on a <3day stay and far cheaper than Autos Mari.

Unless I fly in after midnight, or the in-baggage reclaim cars are prohibitively expensive (often in August) just can't see why I would pay so much more to rent through Autos Mari - where's the advantage ?

If you are going with one of these companies that pick you up on the bus, get one of your party to go straight out to the meeting place while the others pick up the bags. If the bus comes while they are waiting then shoot off and just pick the others up from the airport. Normally beat all the queues that way.

When I searched on the main international companies they were more expensive. Am I pressing the wrong buttons?

Possibly .. for example I have an Atesa username and password to use their site but everything is in Spanish after the main host screen including the contract ... if you try to book through National (the International portal in English), prices are up to double. It just seems to depend on the luck of the draw every time what prices you get quoted - 9 times out of 10 in-terminal has worked out cheaper or no more than Autos Mari for me - and the one time I remember that it didn't in late August last year, Mari had no cars left anyway !

I also use discount codes linked to frequent flyer schemes etc sometimes but usually just paying up-front you can get a good deal from one of them (even though all the others are inevitably shockingly overpriced). Strange but true :o

A little tip that you may not know and will benefit from.
Read the full article in the main site: Car Hire, A Story
Comments welcome!

"...
they stood at the airport with a crowd of rowdy strangers waiting for a mini-bus
to arrive to take them to collect their car.
That wait took over half-an-hour.
On arrival at the car hire office, they then had to queue a further half an hour
before they could start to complete the paperwork.
At this point in time they were advised that there was an extra deposit
required for the full tank of fuel.
Finally, two hours after they had arrived and with some 100 euros worth of additional charges,
they were then free to get in their hire car and drive to their hotel.
Welcome to Ibiza ...

I am thinking about getting a car from Autos Mari. Car Hire, A Story is beautifully written, but sadly lacks specific details.

I understand their office is not at the airport. Do you have to ride a minibus to their depot, or will they bring the car to the airport? And how does returning the car work? Where do you drop the keys?

The guy in the article got his car at the airport, but maybe because he paid extra money for the airport delivery?
