Can?

I've noticed a lot of houses in Ibiza have names and most house names seem to begin with "Can". What does "Can" mean?

Ca'n is a possesive article... is like your genitive sajon Warren's house. In Mallorca, Ibiza... we use Ca'n like Ca'n Warren.
It comes from Ca+en=Ca'n when is a masculine name... when is female name then is Ca Na Trestrazos (p.ex).

Hope that helps you. ;)

What a convoluted response to a simple question. It's the Ibicenco equivalent of Casa or Chez. i.e. Ca'n Roger is the same as Casa Roger in Castillian or Chez Roget in French or I guess Dun Rogering in English!! :)

Thanks for the "Ca Na" though , I've lived on the island for three years and the masculine/feminine never occured to me before and yet all the time it was staring me in the face!

Cala Llenya is one of my favourite beaches to the east of San Carlos which is a few kms north of Santa Eulalia.
We have been house hunting on the island this year. One of the real estate agents emailed us details of a house they thought we might be interested in. The details said that the house was located in a place called Cove Firewood. I had never heard of the place and thought the name sounded far too English. Maybe it was some new development somewhere? but then I realized the agent must have used a computer program to translate all the details. Cala Llenya translated into English is "Cove Firewood"

Just goes to show that estate agents are morons whatever country they operate in! :)
