Having had our electric go off five times since a storm last night I was looking on the nationgrid website to get some information on the power cuts. I read this article that made me wonder if these guys were right in the head!!!
"Hot glove" techniques
Special teams of linesmen in both Northern Powergrid (Northeast) and Northern Powergrid (Yorkshire) have been trained in "hot glove" techniques. Amazingly, this enables them to work safely on overhead power lines up to 11,000 volts without needing to switch off the supply.
Before any work begins, each member of the team goes through rigorous procedures, from donning protective workgear – including special gloves – to applying protective shrouds to overhead lines
