Buying a car.

Hey there,

Im looking to buy myself a wee runabout car. Probably a ford ka, renault clio or citroen saxo (or something similar).

My old car packed in this year after failing its MOT and costing more to repair that its worth.

I really dont have alot of money, but I desperately need a new car.
Is there any form of hire purchase/buy now pay later kind of deals that might work out well for me. Or am I going to have to get myself a bank loan of a couple of thousand over a couple of years.

What would anyone else do?

Any opinions appreciated

Hi there, you'll find that getting a loan through your bank or even buying a car on a credit card will be a lot, lot cheaper than getting any sort of finance through a car dealer. These places make money not on the cars they sell but on the finance.

Good luck with it ;)

agreed.

if you can, take along someone who knows a bit about cars (dont mean someone thats gonna kick the tyres)
old french cars tend to cost a bit more in repairs etc. so i'd probably avoid them.
jap made cars, especially hondas are reliable

if you aren't really too fussed at all, you should be able to pick up a half decent old ford, and if you need parts for it, scrapyards across the uk are full of them.

Go for a fiesta, polo or clio.

Cheap to run and insure.

I'd avoid getting a bank loan over too long a period as you don't want the finance to outlast the car!

One benefit of using a car dealership to HP is that you can usually hand the car back after a couple of years if you want to get rid. But I think tis may only apply to new cars.

What's your budget?

Thanks for replies.

My budget is probably £2000.

I was thinking of applying for a bank loan over 3 years? I had a loan of £1000 over 1 year and it worked out about £100 a month.

How much would £2000 over 3 years be? excuse my mathematically useless brain!

You probably could get an alright car for that..

B careful of Clios, a certain year group (think from 1998-2001) have faulty bonnets catches... it was on WatchDog a while ago and it actually happened to me driving down the M6 @ 100mph and the bonnet just released itself completeing obliterating my windscreen and writing off my car.. very frightening! With my insurance payout i got a 51 plate punto (£2.5k).

Loans are the best idea, work out the most you can afford to pay a month and work the loan out on that.. 2k over 3 years is prob 70ish a month.

but don't the car dealers offer stuff like guarantees, free insurance, etc, etc as well, so sometimes it may be worth it with them. many are 0% at the moment as well i think.

i am not a car salesman btw.
