Decorations and tree up.
Mulled wine and mincers at the ready.
Sound system primed.
…and a Bunker full of keen selectors. ♫♫
Once again, we gathered under the disco ball to co-create/re-dream the sound of the season.
This month's brief?
“Feeling the anticipation of stuffed birds, crap telly and festive cheer?…or the dread of family politics and consumerist tripe? Yuletide Bunker Sessions challenges you to translate these feelings into sound.â€
Come one and all! Take a journey with the spirit of Christmas past and see through the eyes of a Bunker muso…
* Cristina; bitter realism, poverty and a broken relationship. A stoic performance held together by the words of her Mum: “I'm a survivor; I pull together Christmas every year. Something has to last.â€
* A Talking Heads anthem to nihilism, “…on a road to nowhereâ€.
* An anti-consumerist song for peace from feminist punk collective, the Poison Girls.
* Silent Night juxtaposed with murder, unrest and the Vietnam war in Nixon's US - Simon and Garfunkel's anti war message, using the song famously sung by German and British troops during the Christmas truce in World War I.
* Apocalyptic prophecies from Killing Joke, “Myth & legend learned anew. Geometrical creation hidden from the common view.â€
* Harmonic, non-denominational festive fromage from Destiny's Child.
* A pleasant gabber ditty titled ‘Bethlehem Riot'. :-/
* The Benny Hill theme: the collective mood as we're trampled to death under an avalanche of consumer durables on Oxford Street.
* Coil's eight-and-a-half minute death knell and unlikely cover of ‘Are You Being Served?' set in a John Lewis lift:
“Ground floor: perfumery, Stationery and leather goods, Wigs and haberdashery, Kitchenware and foods. Going up. Going up.â€
Face it honey, we've all been there.![Wink ;) ;)](https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/joypixels/assets/8.0/png/unicode/64/1f609.png)
* Eartha Kitt wants to be evil - the way every Grinch does by December 27th when the mere mention of Christmas brings us out in hives.
* …and we leave you with a lump in your throat (bile?) as the Salsoul Orchestra rattle through a (vomitworthy) Christmas medley.
Finally - The question on every Londoner's lips this month: “Will Santa bring me a Kraftwerk ticket?†(February retrospective gigs have been announced!) This session is peppered with Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider ditties including a Latin American styled “Wir fahr'n fahr'n fahr'n auf der Autobahn†- class.
Chris Dercon, Director of the Tate Modern:
“As a former power station, Tate Modern's Turbine Hall is an ideal venue for Kraftwerk's explorations of technology, energy and rhythm. Bringing together music, video and performance, these events will be true gesamtkunstwerk – a total work of art.†- It's like Tribal Gathering ‘97 all over again!
Nuff said. So mote it be!
