Bunker Sessions is celebrating its six month anniversary with a two part “Balearic” special (second installment to follow next week).

The British may be part responsible for the musical impact of Ibiza but any cool credentials are quickly swallowed (along with everything else), as we cavort around the island with the grace, style and gurn of a nuclear missile :-$.

The jury's out on what Balearic even means. (Does anyone actually know?) To me it's any sound that translates to a sun lounger and cerveza (!). A blend of classic soul, Spanish acoustic guitars, afro/latin rhythms, ambient synths and psychedelic rock artfully interspersed with carefully considered cheese you'd never get away with playing in London! (For the purposes of irony you must understand *cough*)

This selection evokes memories of lazy afternoons on Sa Trinxa - hands down, my favourite chill spot in the whole damn world…bittersweet memories as I've not re-connected with the place since 2007 and here we are on the Spring equinox preparing for snowfall. Nnngggghhhhhhh.

Alan and I compiled this aeons ago and it's officially the mix that provided inspiration for the Bunker Sessions concept. But without putting too fine a point on it, this is just us pissing around after a night out, without much in the way of concentration.
¡Olé! **belch** xxx

Part two of our “Balearic”, bandwagon jumping special.

…and still none the wiser on how to interpret this ‘had to be there' 80s cliché.

I did however spend the best part of a decade living out my halcyon days in Ibiza soaking up the turntable wizardry of modern Balearic supremo, Jon Sa Trinxa *sigh*. Shiny happy afternoons, sparked out in a heap on Playa de Salinas, drifting in and out of consciousness to the likes of Simon & Garfunkel, The Pat Metheny Group and the Jackson Five. Then at sunset, Jon would ratchet up the tempo a little with a bit of lazy chug-house (inadvertently coining the the irksome ‘beach house' tag in the process).

I can rack my brains to come up with contextual reasons, like the above, as to why Alan and I suddenly came over all HOUSE, but it's blatantly obvious we just got back on it and whipped ourselves up into a fromage frenzy! :-$

90s aficionados skip to (1:40:02) for a mini Boy's Own tribute. Terry Farley and Pete Heller (aka Roach Motel) were part of the Junior Boy's Own collective along with Andrew Weatherall, Cymon Eckel and Steven Hall. JBO were the epicentre of early 90's house culture at a time when the sound had reached a level of maturity without losing its four-to-the-floor heads down simplicity. ‘Movin' On' (1:43:55) was arguably the first time UK house producers were taken seriously by the Yanks. It was also a firm favourite on one of the first bootleg house tapes I ever owned.

The Boy's Own collective still lay on parties in and around London; well worth the schlep if you're nimble enough to bag a ticket. Their Lil' Louis ‘Chicago Legends' date at XOYO was off the scale! - Plus it's a delight being the youngest whippersnapper on the floor. ;))

We also go a bit ‘Sound Factory/House of Xtravaganza' with a couple of Danny Tenaglia's early productions (1:57:12); an era that will never be put to sleep…at least in my living room anyway!

The Look - Glammer Girl (2:05:25):
“Is that a boy or a girl? Is it a faggot? It's a dyke! No, it's a hippy. A Communist. Perhaps it's a drag queen. Or a wash rag queen. Probably a speed freak. Or a pot head. Or a muffin queen. Look at her—it's just a whore. Or maybe a gold digger. She's a hustler. Yeah, or some sort of intellectual. She's probably a rimmer. Hmph—maybe a speed freak…A chicken queen. Or a shrimp freak. It could be a narc. Yeah, or maybe a beatnik. Or a junkie. Yes, or an acid head. Or a spade? Or just a gigolo. Or just a flower child. Yeah…**** kicker. Or a red. Yeah, or a glamour girl. Yeah—maybe just some polack. Or a war monger. Yeah, or an S&M queen. Oh, it's just a teenager. Yeah, maybe it's one of those Hell's Angels. You think it's a baby butch?”

Happy six month anniversary Bunker children! xxx
