Imbolc has passed…FINALLY time to emerge from February sluggishness and set some new intentions for Spring. Bunker Sessions has been to some deep places during the winter months so the vernal equinox edition was an experiment to see whether we've been playing to the seasons in ourselves.
…or whether we're just a pack of miserable old goths. )
This session is the product of a much smaller gathering and what we lacked in genre diversity, we certainly made up for in group energy and sonic flow…Look out for some dribbleworthy Claussell moments (43:19) mixed in with AtJazz (1:46:10 - note Leon Ware's vocals!) and a great Ashley Beedle rework of Takada (1:22:10).
We also visit the Motherland with a stunning Liza Richardson remix of Femi Kuti (1:01:22), and a collaboration between Boddhi Satva and Africa's finest, Oumou Sangare (check her out at 56:35)
Personal selections come from Kaidi (Bugs in the attic/DKD) and none other thanCarleen Anderson (Young Disciples) - we are not worthy! :-0 Forrrce provide a lesson in dub (34:37 - straight from the floor at London's Beauty and the Beat) and music biographer, Tim Lawrence recommends Strafe - Set it off (25:33) where“Walter Gibbons's preoccupation with rhythm is focused into a pared back, sleek and slow-burning production that combines early hip-hop with a pulsing guitar line and deep electro funk.â€
Featured artist this month is my childhood hero - MJ. Michael and his brothers exploded on the scene in the late 60s, at a time when the civil rights movement had been tearing down the walls of American apartheid. Together, they were a key part of this revolution, building musical bridges for black and white audiences to heal and enjoy. No one could've anticipated the success that lay ahead for Michael, cemented by Thriller, which went on to sell in excess of 50 million copies worldwide. It wasn't until 1987 that I picked up one of his albums from my local Woolies; £5.49 on cassette at the tender age of 8. Bad, MJ's third collaboration with Quincey Jones, went on to provide the soundtrack to my youth and still holds pride of place in my collection.
When LA sources confirmed Michael's death, I was tramping around Glastonbury festival. News tore across the camp sites like forest fire, immediately setting 175,000 tongues wagging in unison. Everyone from burger vans to dance tents and Pyramid headliners paid tribute to his catalogue, and it goes without saying that, ‘Don't stop till you get enough' set fire to the floor of the NYC Downlow that eve…!
I'm watching ‘This is it' as I type; bittersweet viewing as Michael certainly had the moves to pack into that ill fated O2 residency and his voice still oozed a slightly ethereal quality.
“Being on stage is magic. There's nothing like it. You feel the energy of everybody who's out there. You feel it all over your body. When the lights hit you, it's all over, I swear it is.†– Michael Jackson (Rolling Stone Magazine, 1983)
The session ends with a chef d'oeuvre from The Jackson Five, ‘I am love' (2:29:41) - arguably their finest release.
So here goes…touching down with a playlist straight from the heart of Bunker Sessions. We hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed delving/sharing.
