TOKYO/THE DEVIL OF NANKING

By Mo Hayder

By far the most scary book I've ever read. Its about a girl, called Grey ( called Grey, because she´s so anonomous and average). Shes a girl who has a troubled past, which unfolds as we get into the story. She's been obsessed by the chinese Nanking massacre in 1937 ever since she was a child. She decides to go to Tokyo, to try and find a missing tape, revealing the true horrors of what went on during the invasion of Nanking by the Japanese.

She tracks down a chinese teacher, who at first wants nothing to do with her - and as we hear her story, we read about the teachers flash backs about the events that had a terrifying impact on his life during the invasion. her purpose is to try and get the tape from him, because shes convinced he holds the missing link.

Grey is stranded in tokyo, having no luck with the teacher, has no money and one day - after having slept in a park near Tokyo Power, she meets a guy - Jason - who offers her shelter in the house he shares with two russian girls. She can't pay so he fixes her up with an upmarket club, where she becomes a host. Soon she meets the über gangster, and his scary nurse...its rumored that the gangster is surviving thanks to some secret medication he takes.

Grey becomes intimate with Jason, and starts getting closer to the gangsters when at work. Meanwhile Grey tried to convince the teacher to give up the tape, but he won't. One day he offers her a trade: unless she manages to infiltrate with the japanese gangsters and find out what the secret medicine is - he wont help. She needs to find out what secret medicine the über gangster is taking -. and steal it from him....

Jason and her are warned by the club owner, when they are invited home to a private party in the gangster mansion, and from there the events unfold....

If you´ve been to tokyo, like I have 3 times now, the atmosphere of this book will instantly grip you. Its sooooo well written and narrated

might not sound of much, but beliiiiieve me its dead scary! and it all fits so perfectly together. her background story, the story about the teacher and his life during the nangkin massacre and the gangster - its like the perfect web spun.....

YOU MUST READ IT! :)
